Tour Overview
This private two-day tour takes you from Luxor to Aswan by first-class train and on to the temples of Abu Simbel. On day one you see the Aswan High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple, then spend the night in a 5-star hotel in Aswan. On day two you leave very early by private car for Abu Simbel, return to Aswan for lunch and take the train back to Luxor.
Tour Highlights
- Stand in front of the four seated statues of Ramses II at Abu Simbel, each about 20 meters high, cut straight into the sandstone cliff above Lake Nasser.
- Visit the smaller temple Ramses built for Hathor and his queen Nefertari, where her statues stand as tall as the king's, which is rare in Egyptian art.
- Cross by boat to Philae, the island temple of Isis, which was rescued from the rising Nile and rebuilt on higher ground by UNESCO.
- See the Aswan High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk, two very different examples of how Egyptians, ancient and modern, worked on a giant scale.
- Travel by first-class train between Luxor and Aswan, sleep in a 5-star Aswan hotel, and have your own guide and private car on both days.
Tour Route
Is the 2-day Aswan and Abu Simbel tour from Luxor worth it?
Yes, if you are based in Luxor and want to see Abu Simbel without booking a cruise. In two days you cover the main sights of Aswan and both temples of Ramses II, with a 5-star night in between, a guide and private car on both days, and the train covering the long distance.
Why stay a night in Aswan to see Abu Simbel?
Abu Simbel lies far south of Aswan, close to the Sudanese border. Going from Luxor and back in one day means a very long time in a car. Sleeping in Aswan splits the trip in two, gives you an afternoon of sightseeing in Aswan itself, and lets you reach Abu Simbel early in the day, before the heat.
What are the Abu Simbel temples?
They are two temples that Ramses II had carved into a sandstone cliff above the Nile, completed around 1264 BC. The Great Temple honors Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, Ptah and the king himself. The smaller temple is dedicated to Hathor and to Nefertari, his favorite queen.
- The rescue: in the 1960s both temples were cut into blocks and rebuilt on higher ground, clear of the water rising behind the High Dam.
- The sun alignment: twice a year, around 22 February and 22 October, the rising sun reaches the statues in the inner sanctuary.
What are the other ways to see Abu Simbel?
If you are already in Aswan, the Abu Simbel private day tour from Aswan covers the temples in one day. The 4-night Nile cruise from Luxor offers Abu Simbel as an optional excursion, and our Abu Simbel Sun Festival guide explains the two days each year when the sun lights the sanctuary.
Tour Itinerary
Two full days: Aswan's main sights and a night in the city, then a very early start for Abu Simbel and the train home.
We collect you from your hotel in Luxor and take you to the railway station for the first-class train south. The line follows the Nile past palm groves, sugar cane and villages. In Aswan, your Egyptologist guide and private car meet you to start the tour.
Built in the 1960s, the High Dam ended the yearly Nile flood and created Lake Nasser. Your guide explains how it changed Egypt, and why it forced the international rescue of the Nubian temples, including the ones you will see at Abu Simbel tomorrow.
In the old granite quarry lies an obelisk from the time of Queen Hatshepsut, abandoned after the stone cracked. Had it been finished, it would have been about 42 meters long, the largest ever made. The tool marks around it show how ancient masons worked.
A short boat ride takes you to the island temple of Isis, the goddess who brought Osiris back to life and gave birth to Horus. Begun under the last native pharaohs, it was built mainly by the Ptolemies and finished by the Romans.
Lunch is at a restaurant overlooking the Nile, included in the price. It is a good place to slow down after the morning's sites and watch the feluccas sail between the granite islands and the desert hills on the far bank.
You check in to a 5-star hotel in Aswan on a bed-and-breakfast basis, and the rest of the evening is yours. Walk along the Corniche or rest by the river, but go to bed early if you can: tomorrow starts before sunrise.
A very early start with a breakfast box from the hotel. Your guide and private car take you south through the open desert to Abu Simbel, near the border with Sudan. Most people sleep for the first part of the drive.
Ramses II had both temples cut into the cliff in the 13th century BC. Your guide explains the history outside, then you go in at your own pace, through the great hall of Osiris pillars to the sanctuary, and on to the temple of Nefertari.
Back in Aswan you have lunch at a restaurant, then transfer to the station for the first-class train to Luxor, where we drive you to your hotel. The train, hotel, guide, car, listed meals and entrance fees on both days are covered.
