Tour Overview
This Luxor horse carriage ride takes you through the streets of the town in a traditional calèche, the horse-drawn carriage that locals call a hantour. We pick you up from your hotel, Nile cruise or wherever you are staying in Luxor, and the ride passes through the traditional bazaars and the local market, with an Egyptian meal and tea or coffee along the way. Lunch, mineral water and soft drinks are included. It is a slow, street-level look at everyday Luxor rather than a temple tour.
Tour Highlights
- See everyday Luxor from the seat of a horse-drawn carriage, slow enough to watch the street life, shops and cafés go by.
- Ride through the traditional bazaars, with their spices, scarves and souvenirs, and see the local market where residents do their own shopping.
- Stop for an Egyptian meal with tea or coffee during the outing, included in the price along with mineral water and soft drinks.
- Get pickup from your hotel, Nile cruise boat or private residence in Luxor, and a drop-off back at the same place afterward.
- Take a break from tombs and temples with an easy outing that needs very little walking, well suited to families and older travelers.
Tour Route
Is a horse carriage ride in Luxor worth it?
Yes, if you want a change of pace from temples and tombs. A carriage ride shows you modern Luxor at street level: its markets, cafés and neighborhoods, which most visitors only see through a car window on the way between sites. It suits families, couples and anyone who wants a gentle outing.
The hantour has been part of Luxor's streets for generations and is still a familiar sight in town. Riding in one is the simplest way to slow down, look around and see the city the way its residents live in it.
What will you see on the Luxor carriage ride?
The ride covers the streets of Luxor town, its traditional bazaars and the local market. It is about atmosphere rather than ancient sites: everyday street life, small workshops, spice and souvenir stalls and the rhythm of a busy Egyptian city. If there is a street or area you especially want to see, ask us when you book.
How do you shop in the Luxor bazaar?
Shopping is optional, but if you want souvenirs, the bazaar is the place to find them. Prices in small shops are usually not fixed, and polite bargaining is normal and expected. A few simple habits make it easier and more fun:
- Cash: carry Egyptian pounds in small notes, since many small stalls do not take cards.
- Bargaining: offer well below the first price and settle somewhere in the middle, with a smile.
- Saying no: a friendly "no, thank you" is enough; you do not have to stop at every shop.
- Popular buys: spices, cotton scarves, alabaster pieces and brass lanterns.
What if you are worried about the carriage horse?
Many travelers care about how working horses are treated, and that is a fair thing to think about before you book. If at any point during the ride you feel the horse looks tired or unwell, or is being driven too hard, tell the driver and contact us straight away so we can step in.
How is this different from the Luxor temple tours?
This is a light outing in town, not a guided tour of the monuments. It does not include temple or tomb visits or their entrance fees, and it is priced and planned as a relaxed ride with a meal, so it fits easily around your sightseeing days.
For the ancient sites, book the Karnak and Luxor Temple East Bank tour or the Valley of the Kings West Bank tour, or see both banks in one day on the Luxor East and West Bank tour. The carriage ride then makes an easy outing for a free part of your stay.
Tour Itinerary
A simple, unhurried outing: pickup, the carriage ride through town and the bazaars, a meal along the way, then back to where you are staying.
We collect you from your hotel, your Nile cruise boat or the address where you are staying in Luxor. You then meet your carriage and its driver, climb up into the seat and set off through the town at the easy pace of a horse, with the noise of the city around you.
The carriage rolls through the streets of town, past houses, shops, mosques and cafés, among the everyday traffic of a working Egyptian city. Modern Luxor is built over ancient Thebes, so old stones appear between new buildings, and the ride gives you a feel for how the two live side by side.
The route takes in Luxor's traditional bazaars and its local market. In the bazaar you find spices, cotton scarves, lanterns and carved souvenirs, while the local market is where residents buy fruit, vegetables and household goods. Shopping is entirely up to you, and nothing is compulsory.
A meal of Egyptian food is included, together with tea or coffee, mineral water and soft drinks. Egyptian cooking is built around fresh bread, beans, rice, vegetables and grilled meat, and the meal is a relaxed pause in the middle of the outing before you head back.
At the end of the ride you are taken back to your hotel, boat or residence. Pickup, the meal, the drinks and all service charges are already covered, so you only need cash for tips and for anything you decide to buy in the bazaar.
