Is 2 days enough to see Cairo from Marsa Alam?

Two days cover Cairo's essentials: the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel, the royal mummies and the old bazaar. You will not see Saqqara, Memphis or Coptic Cairo, but you get a first visit that is complete and not rushed.

What is the difference between the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Egyptian Museum?

The Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza is the new home of Tutankhamun's treasures and of large royal statues, shown in modern galleries. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir is the older building, with dense rooms of objects from every era. On this trip you visit both, one on each day.

Seeing them together is useful: the new museum gives you the big picture and the famous pieces, while the old one shows how much else survives, from wooden models to painted coffins.

What should you wear for Cairo's mosques and museums?

Choose light clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, since you enter the Muhammad Ali Mosque and pass mosques on Al-Muizz Street. Women may want a scarf for the mosque. Wear comfortable closed shoes for the sand at Giza and the long museum floors.

How is this different from the other Cairo trips from Marsa Alam?

The Cairo day trip by plane matches day one of this trip and flies you home the same evening. This 2-day version keeps that first day and adds a 5-star hotel night and a second day for the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and the Royal Mummies Hall.

If you want ancient Thebes as well as the Pyramids, the 2-day Cairo and Luxor trip drives you to Luxor first and then flies you to Cairo. For more ideas in the capital, see our Cairo day tours.

Tour Itinerary

Both days are full: day one is ancient Giza and medieval Cairo, and day two is museums and the Citadel before the flight back to the coast.

1
Day 1 · Morning Transfer to Marsa Alam airport and flight to Cairo

A private air-conditioned car takes you from your hotel to Marsa Alam airport for your flight to Cairo. At Cairo airport your private Egyptologist guide meets you, and you drive together to the Giza Plateau. Bring a small overnight bag, since you spend the night in Cairo.

2
Day 1 · Morning The Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx

The three pyramids of Giza were raised for the 4th-dynasty kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure around 4,500 years ago. Your guide explains how the Great Pyramid was built, then leads you to the Sphinx and to Khafre's Valley Temple, built from massive granite blocks at the foot of the causeway.

3
Day 1 · Late morning The Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum stands close to the plateau and was built to show Egypt's treasures on a modern scale. Your guide takes you to the colossal Ramesses II statue in the atrium, the Grand Staircase lined with royal sculpture, and the galleries that display Tutankhamun's tomb treasures together.

4
Day 1 · Afternoon Lunch, Al-Muizz Street and Khan el-Khalili

After an included lunch at a restaurant with a view of the Pyramids or the Nile, you drive into Islamic Cairo. Al-Muizz Street was the spine of the Fatimid city, lined with mosques and madrasas, and next to it lies the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, trading since the Mamluk era.

5
Day 1 · Evening Check in at your 5-star hotel in Cairo

At the end of the day your guide takes you to your 5-star hotel to check in. The evening is free, so you can rest, have dinner at the hotel or go out in the city on your own. Dinner is not part of the price.

6
Day 2 · Morning Breakfast and the Egyptian Museum

After breakfast you check out and meet your guide for the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, opened in the early 20th century. Its crowded halls hold statues, coffins and everyday objects from every period of ancient Egypt, and your guide picks out the pieces that tell the story best.

7
Day 2 · Midday Lunch, the Citadel and the Muhammad Ali Mosque

Lunch is included at a local restaurant. Then you climb to the Citadel, the fortress Saladin began in the 12th century on a spur above the city. Inside stands the Ottoman-style Muhammad Ali Mosque, known as the Alabaster Mosque, with wide views over Cairo from its terrace.

8
Day 2 · Afternoon National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

Your last visit is the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat. Its main galleries trace Egypt from prehistory to modern times, and the Royal Mummies Hall holds kings and queens such as Ramesses II and Hatshepsut, moved here in the 2021 Pharaohs' Golden Parade.

9
Day 2 · Evening Flight to Hurghada and drive to Marsa Alam

Your guide takes you to Cairo airport for the included flight to Hurghada. A private air-conditioned car meets you on arrival and drives you south along the Red Sea coast to your hotel in Marsa Alam, where the trip ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about this tour. For anything else, message us on WhatsApp — we reply fast.

Where does the 2-day Cairo trip from Marsa Alam start?

It starts at your hotel in Marsa Alam, where a private car picks you up and takes you to the airport for the flight to Cairo. It ends at the same hotel on day two, after the flight from Cairo to Hurghada and the included road transfer south along the coast.

What is included: flights, hotel and meals?

The price includes the domestic flights to Cairo and back to Hurghada, one night in a 5-star Cairo hotel with breakfast, lunch on both days, a qualified Egyptologist guide, private air-conditioned transfers, bottled water, entrance fees to the sites in the program, and taxes. Dinner and tips are not included.

Is this a private tour, and why does the price change?

Yes. The guide and car are only for you and your companions. The per-person price falls as the group grows, because the guide, car and transfers are shared, and it changes by season, since flights and Cairo hotels cost more in winter and over Christmas and New Year.

Can I explore Cairo on my own in the evening?

Yes. After check-in the evening is yours. You can rest at the hotel or take a taxi to a restaurant or the Nile corniche. Ask your guide for suggestions near your hotel. Keep your passport safe at the hotel, but carry a copy and your hotel card when you go out.

Is Avicon Travel a licensed tour operator?

Yes. Avicon Travel is a Class "A" travel agency licensed by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism under License No. 1962 and registered since 2010. Our office and team are in Karnak, Luxor, so the guides, drivers and cars on this tour are our own local team, not a booking desk abroad.
