Tour Overview
This private day trip takes you from Marsa Alam to Cairo by plane and back in a single day. A car brings you from your hotel to Marsa Alam airport for an early flight north, and in Cairo your Egyptologist guide leads you around the Giza Pyramids, the Great Sphinx, the Valley Temple and the Grand Egyptian Museum. After lunch you walk Al-Muizz Street and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, then fly to Hurghada, where a private car drives you south to your hotel.
Tour Highlights
- See Egypt's capital without giving up a night of your Red Sea holiday: both flights, the guide and every transfer are arranged for you.
- Stand at the base of Khufu's Great Pyramid, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing, and then face the Great Sphinx.
- Walk through Khafre's granite Valley Temple beside the Sphinx, where Egyptologists believe the rites for the dead king were held before his burial.
- Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum near the plateau, where Tutankhamun's tomb treasures are shown together and a colossal statue of Ramesses II greets you inside.
- Finish in medieval Cairo on Al-Muizz Street, lined with Fatimid and Mamluk mosques, and browse the spice, brass and lantern shops of Khan el-Khalili.
Tour Route
Is a day trip from Marsa Alam to Cairo worth it?
Yes, if Cairo would otherwise be left out of your holiday. Flying both ways replaces a very long road journey, and in one day you still see the Pyramids, the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the medieval city. The trade-off is pace: the program is full and there is little free time.
If you would like an evening in Cairo and a second day for the old Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and the royal mummies, the 2-day version of this trip adds a night in a 5-star hotel.
Why does the return flight land in Hurghada?
The tickets in the price are Marsa Alam to Cairo in the morning and Cairo to Hurghada at the end of the day. Hurghada is the main airport further north on the same coast, so the trip finishes with an included private car transfer south to your hotel in Marsa Alam.
What should you bring on a Cairo day trip by plane?
Carry your passport all day, since you need it to check in at both airports. Wear comfortable shoes for the sand and uneven stone at Giza, and bring a hat, sunscreen, water and a light layer for the air-conditioned planes and museum halls.
- Clothing: shoulders and knees covered for the mosques on Al-Muizz Street.
- Cash: small notes for tips and for shopping in Khan el-Khalili.
- Bag: one small backpack that you are happy to carry all day.
How is this different from other Cairo and Luxor trips from Marsa Alam?
This is the only trip from Marsa Alam that sees Cairo and brings you back the same day. The 2-day Cairo trip by plane starts with the same first day, then adds a hotel night and a second day of museums and the Citadel.
If you would rather stay closer, the private Luxor day trip from Marsa Alam goes by road to the tombs and temples of ancient Thebes with no flights at all. Planning more time in the capital later? Browse our Cairo day tours.
Tour Itinerary
With two flights and a road transfer, this is a long day: expect an early start and a return to Marsa Alam at the end of the day.
A private air-conditioned car collects you from your hotel and takes you to Marsa Alam airport for your flight to Cairo. The ticket is part of the price, so you only need your passport and booking details. Pack light, because you travel with your bag through the whole day.
Your private Egyptologist guide meets you on arrival in Cairo and rides with you in an air-conditioned car to the Giza Plateau on the western edge of the city. Use the drive to tell your guide what matters most to you, since the day combines pyramids, a large museum and the old city.
Khufu's pyramid was built around 2560 BC from more than two million stone blocks and remained the tallest structure on earth for thousands of years. Your guide explains how it was planned and raised, then walks you down to the Sphinx, carved from the living rock and usually linked to King Khafre.
Next to the Sphinx, the Valley Temple of Khafre is built from huge, almost undecorated granite blocks. You then continue to the Grand Egyptian Museum, where your guide picks out highlights such as the full Tutankhamun collection, the Hanging Obelisk and the giant Ramesses II statue.
Lunch is included at a restaurant looking out over the Pyramids or the Nile. It is the main sit-down break of the day, so take your time, rest your feet and ask your guide about anything you saw in the morning.
Your guide then takes you into Islamic Cairo. Al-Muizz Street was the main avenue of the Fatimid city founded in the 10th century, and its mosques, madrasas and old houses still line the route. Beside it, Khan el-Khalili has been a market since the Mamluk era, with narrow lanes of silver, spice and lamp shops.
At the end of the tour you are taken to Cairo airport for the included flight to Hurghada. A private air-conditioned car meets you there and drives you south along the Red Sea coast to your hotel in Marsa Alam, where the trip ends.
