Tour Overview
This private two-day tour gives Cairo the time a single day from Sharm El Sheikh cannot. You fly from Sinai to Cairo on the first morning, see the Giza Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Step Pyramid of Saqqara, and sleep in a 5-star hotel in Cairo. Day two covers the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili before the flight back to Sharm.
Tour Highlights
- Add Saqqara, which the one-day trips skip: Djoser's Step Pyramid, designed by the architect Imhotep, is the oldest large stone building in Egypt.
- Spend day one at Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, with the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple and Tutankhamun's complete collection.
- Stay overnight in a 5-star Cairo hotel with breakfast, so the second day starts rested rather than after an early flight from Sinai.
- See the royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, and the historic collection of the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
- Climb to Saladin's Citadel for the Muhammad Ali Mosque and wide city views, then end the trip on Al Muizz Street and in Khan El Khalili.
Tour Route
Why spend two days in Cairo instead of one?
A day trip from Sharm El Sheikh covers Giza and a few museum hours between two flights. With a night in the city you add Saqqara, the Citadel and the royal mummies, and you see the sights without watching the clock for a same-day flight home.
How is this different from the Cairo day trip by plane?
Both start with the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum and Khan El Khalili. The two-day tour adds three major sites and a hotel night, and it spreads the walking over two days. If you are choosing between them, the extra day matters most for Saqqara and the royal mummies.
- Saqqara: Djoser's Step Pyramid, the oldest of the pyramids.
- The Citadel: Saladin's fortress and the Muhammad Ali Mosque.
- NMEC: the Royal Mummies Hall in Fustat.
- Overnight: a 5-star Cairo hotel with breakfast and a second lunch.
What should you wear for the mosque and the Citadel?
Choose clothes that cover shoulders and knees. You take your shoes off inside the Muhammad Ali Mosque, so slip-on shoes help, and women may want a light scarf to cover their hair. The same outfit works for Al Muizz Street, and comfortable soles matter on both days.
What else can you book from Sharm El Sheikh?
If one day is all you can spare, the same-day flight covers Giza, the museums and Khan El Khalili. If you want Luxor as well as Cairo, the overnight trip pairs Giza with the Valley of the Kings. And Ras Mohammed is a short ride from Sharm for a sea day.
See the Cairo day trip from Sharm by plane, the 2-day Cairo and Luxor trip by plane and the Ras Mohammed snorkeling trip.
Tour Itinerary
Day one stays on the west side of the Nile with the pyramids and the new museum; day two is a full program through Cairo's museums, the Citadel and the old Islamic quarter.
Our representative picks you up from your hotel in Sharm El Sheikh and takes you to the airport for your flight to Cairo. Bring a small overnight bag and your passport. When you land, your private guide and air-conditioned car are ready to drive you to Giza.
On the Giza plateau stand the three main pyramids of the 4th Dynasty, with six smaller queens' pyramids beside them. Your guide takes you around the Great Pyramid of Khufu, then down to the Sphinx and the granite Valley Temple of Khafre, where royal funerals began.
The Grand Egyptian Museum sits right beside the plateau. Pass the Hanging Obelisk at the entrance, meet the colossal Ramses II in the atrium, and climb the grand staircase of royal statues to the galleries where all of Tutankhamun's burial goods are shown together.
Lunch is included at a local restaurant between Giza and Saqqara. Sit down out of the sun, drink plenty of water and ask your guide about the morning, because the afternoon takes you to the site where Egypt's age of pyramid building began.
At Saqqara you see where pyramid building began. Around 2650 BC, the architect Imhotep stacked six stone platforms into a stepped pyramid for King Djoser, the first large building in Egypt made entirely of cut stone. Your guide shows you the enclosure walls and courtyards around it.
Your car takes you to a 5-star hotel in Cairo, where you check in for the night. Dinner is not part of the program, so the evening is yours to eat at the hotel or nearby and rest before a busy second day.
After breakfast you check out and meet your guide. The first stop is the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, opened in the early 1900s and still packed with statues, coffins, papyri and jewelry. Your guide leads you to the key pieces so the visit stays focused.
Your second lunch is included at a local restaurant in Cairo. Take your time here: the afternoon moves through three different parts of the city, from the hilltop Citadel to Fustat, and ends with a walk through the old bazaar.
Saladin began the Citadel in 1176 on a spur of the Muqattam Hills, and it served as the seat of Egypt's rulers for some seven hundred years. Inside, the Ottoman-style Muhammad Ali Mosque, finished in the 1840s and faced with alabaster, looks out over the whole city.
In Fustat, the oldest Islamic-era part of Cairo, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization traces Egypt's story from prehistory to modern times. Its Royal Mummies Hall holds the mummies of kings and queens such as Ramses II and Hatshepsut, shown in quiet, dim galleries.
The last stop is Islamic Cairo. Al Muizz Street, the main avenue of the Fatimid city, is lined with mosques and Mamluk monuments, and it runs into Khan El Khalili, the bazaar where you can shop for lanterns, spices and silver, then fly back to Sharm.

Yes. Your guide and car are for your group only. The per-person rate falls as the group gets bigger, because the guide and car cost the same however many people share them. Prices also go up in the cooler months, when flights and Cairo hotels are in higher demand.
You check out of the Cairo hotel after breakfast on day two, and your bag travels with you in the private car until the airport. That is why a small overnight bag works best. Keep valuables and your passport on you, and leave your large suitcase at your hotel in Sharm.
