Tour Overview
On this private day trip you fly from Aswan to Cairo and back again before night, so you can see the Pyramids without giving up your plans in the south. In Cairo, a private Egyptologist guide and car take you to the Giza plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili. Both domestic flights, transfers from your Aswan hotel or Nile cruise, lunch and entrance fees are included.
Tour Highlights
- Look up at the Great Pyramid of Khufu, built from more than two million limestone blocks, while your guide explains how a Fourth Dynasty workforce raised it.
- Face the Great Sphinx, carved straight out of the Giza bedrock, and step inside Khafre's Valley Temple, where square pink granite pillars still stand in rows.
- Walk past the Hanging Obelisk into the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the 11-meter Ramses II and every object from Tutankhamun's tomb are displayed under one roof.
- See the original Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, open since 1902, where royal statues, mummy cases and Old Kingdom treasures fill tall wooden showcases.
- End the day on Al Muizz Street among Fatimid and Mamluk mosques, then browse the lanes of Khan El Khalili before your evening flight south to Aswan.
Tour Route
Can you visit Cairo from Aswan in one day?
Yes, but only by plane. Cairo is almost 900 kilometers north of Aswan, too far to drive there and back in a day. With a flight at each end, you get a full day in Cairo and still sleep in Aswan. The trade-off is pace: an early start, a late return and brisk sightseeing in between.
Which sights are on the Cairo day trip from Aswan?
Five stops after you land, with entrance fees for each included. They run from the Old Kingdom pharaohs to the medieval city, a broad first look at Cairo.
- Giza plateau: the Great Pyramid, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple.
- Grand Egyptian Museum: Ramses II, the Hanging Obelisk and the full Tutankhamun collection.
- Egyptian Museum: the historic collection in Tahrir Square.
- Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili: Islamic Cairo and its oldest market.
What do you need for a same-day flight to Cairo?
Bring your passport, because you need it for the domestic flights. Wear comfortable shoes for the sand at Giza and the museum floors, and take a hat, sunglasses and a light layer for the plane and the evening. Your flight details are shared with you before the trip.
Why is the price higher in winter?
The two flights make up most of the cost, and fares between Aswan and Cairo go up from October to March and peak over Christmas and New Year. The price per person also gets lower as your group gets bigger, since you share the same guide and car. May to September is usually the cheapest period.
What else can you do from Aswan?
For a night in Cairo and a slower pace, look at the 2-day Cairo trip from Aswan by plane, which adds Saqqara and Old Cairo. Back in the south, our Aswan day tours include Philae and the Nubian villages, and the Cairo travel guide helps you plan the capital.
Tour Itinerary
Expect a very long day: you fly the length of Egypt twice, and between the flights you cover Giza, two museums and medieval Cairo at a steady pace.
A driver collects you from your hotel or Nile cruise in Aswan and takes you to Aswan Airport. Your domestic tickets are already booked; just bring your passport. In Cairo, your private Egyptologist guide and driver are waiting to head straight for Giza.
Three kings of the Fourth Dynasty, Khufu, his son Khafre and Menkaure, chose this desert plateau for their tombs about 4,500 years ago. Your guide shows you the Great Pyramid, the largest of the three, and explains how its granite King's Chamber and Grand Gallery were laid out inside.
The Sphinx rests below the pyramids with a lion's body and a royal head usually identified as Khafre. Between its paws stands a stone tablet left by Thutmose IV about a thousand years later. Beside it, the Valley Temple was the first stop of the king's funeral, where priests prepared his body.
A few minutes from the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum is aligned with the pyramids. A giant Ramses II greets you in the atrium, a grand staircase of royal statues rises behind him, and the Tutankhamun galleries show his treasures together. Your guide plans a route through the most important halls.
Lunch is included and served at a restaurant looking out over the Pyramids or the Nile. It is a chance to sit in the shade, drink plenty of water and rest before the afternoon in central Cairo.
The pink building on Tahrir Square was Egypt's national museum for more than a hundred years. Even after many famous pieces moved to Giza, its rooms still hold colossal statues, painted coffins, papyri and jewelry from three thousand years of pharaonic rule, displayed in the way early archaeologists arranged them.
Your guide then takes you to Islamic Cairo. Al Muizz Street was the main road of the city the Fatimids founded in 969 AD, and it is still lined with domes, minarets and old houses. At its edge, Khan El Khalili has traded since the 1380s: spices, lanterns, silver and strong tea.
Your guide and driver bring you to Cairo Airport for the flight back. In Aswan, our driver meets you and returns you to your hotel or Nile cruise. You get back late, but without needing a hotel night in Cairo.

It is fully private, with no other travelers added. The rate per person falls as more people join, because the guide and car cost the same for one traveler or eight. It also changes by season, since flights cost more from October to March.
It is a fast day, but the route is planned so you see the essentials: the Pyramids and Sphinx, Tutankhamun's treasures, the old museum and the bazaar. Your guide keeps the timing tight around the flights. If you prefer more time at each stop, choose one of our two-day Cairo trips instead.
