Tour Overview
This private layover tour picks you up at Cairo International Airport and spends the day in the city itself rather than at the pyramids. You visit the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, the Citadel of Salah al-Din, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization with its royal mummies, Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili, with lunch at a Nile-view restaurant. A private Egyptologist guide, car and entrance fees are included, and you finish back at the airport for your onward flight.
Tour Highlights
- See Cairo's history from the pharaohs to the Ottomans in one day, without spending any of your layover on the road to Giza.
- Visit the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, open since 1902 and still home to one of the world's largest collections of ancient Egyptian objects.
- Look over the city from the Citadel, begun by Salah al-Din in the 12th century, and step inside the domed Mosque of Muhammad Ali.
- Meet the kings and queens of the New Kingdom in the Royal Mummies Hall at NMEC, where their mummies were moved in a public parade in 2021.
- End on Al Muizz Street and in Khan El Khalili, the medieval heart of Cairo, with time to shop before you fly on.
Tour Route
What can you see in Cairo on a layover besides the pyramids?
A great deal. In one day you can see the city's two most important museums of ancient Egypt, a medieval fortress and the old Islamic city with its bazaar. This tour stays inside Cairo, which keeps driving shorter than a trip out to Giza or to the pyramid fields further south.
It is a good choice if you have seen the pyramids on an earlier trip, plan to see them later in your journey, or are more curious about Cairo as a living city.
How long a layover do you need for a Cairo city tour?
It is a full day of sightseeing, so it needs a long daytime layover. We do not quote a fixed number of hours, because flight times and Cairo traffic vary. Send us your arrival and departure times, and we will tell you honestly whether all six stops fit with a safe margin.
Do you need a visa, and what about your luggage?
Leaving the airport means entering Egypt, so check the visa rules for your nationality and your airline's transit conditions before you fly; the visa is not included in the price. For luggage, ask your airline whether your bags are checked through, and tell us if you will have suitcases with you.
How is this different from the other Cairo Airport tours?
This is the only airport tour with no pyramids: it trades Giza for the Citadel and the royal mummies at NMEC. The Cairo stopover tour shares the Egyptian Museum, Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili, but swaps the Citadel and NMEC for Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
- Pyramids instead: the Giza Pyramids tour from Cairo Airport covers the plateau, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
- A bit of everything: the Cairo stopover tour mixes Giza, both Egyptian museums and the old bazaar.
- Staying in Cairo: the Best of Cairo tour with NMEC starts and ends at your hotel instead of the airport.
Tour Itinerary
A city day with no pyramids: one museum and the Citadel before lunch, a second museum and the old streets after it, then back to the airport.
After you clear arrival formalities, your private Egyptologist guide meets you at the airport and your driver takes you into the city in an air-conditioned car. Send us your flight details when you book, so the order of the day can be adjusted to your arrival and departure times.
The pink neoclassical building on Tahrir Square opened in 1902 and was for over a century the main home of Egypt's antiquities. It still holds a vast collection, from Old Kingdom statues to the gold of Tanis, and your guide leads you through the rooms most worth your limited time.
Salah al-Din began this fortress in the late 12th century to defend Cairo, and it remained the seat of Egypt's rulers for some 700 years. Inside you visit the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, built in the 19th century with its Ottoman domes and alabaster walls, and the terrace looking over the city.
Lunch is included at a restaurant overlooking the Nile. After a morning in museum halls and on the Citadel terraces, it is your chance to sit down, watch the boats on the river and talk through the afternoon plan with your guide before the second museum.
NMEC stands in Fustat, the site of Egypt's first Islamic capital, and tells the story of Egypt from prehistory to the present. Its most famous room is the Royal Mummies Hall, where kings and queens such as Ramses II and Hatshepsut lie in quiet, softly lit galleries.
Al Muizz Street was the main avenue of Fatimid Cairo in the 10th century and is now the backbone of Historic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You walk past mosques, madrasas and grand houses from the Fatimid and Mamluk eras, with your guide pointing out what each building was for.
The bazaar grew around a merchants' inn built in the late 14th century and is still full of workshops and small shops. Browse for spices, lanterns, inlaid boxes and silver, but remember that anything you buy must fit your airline's baggage allowance.
Your driver takes you back to Cairo International Airport for your departure. The guide, car, lunch, water and entrance fees are already covered, so tips and any extras you choose are the only costs left to plan for before you check in.
