Tour Overview
This private Cairo stopover tour picks you up at Cairo International Airport, shows you the city's headline sights in one day and brings you back to the airport for your onward flight. You see the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili, with lunch in between. A private Egyptologist guide, car, lunch and entrance fees are included. It suits a long daytime layover when you want the widest first look at Cairo.
Tour Highlights
- Leave the airport with your own Egyptologist guide and driver, and get back to the same airport in time for your onward flight.
- Stand at the foot of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.
- See Tutankhamun's tomb treasures displayed together at the Grand Egyptian Museum, along with the colossal statue of Ramses II in its entrance hall.
- Visit the original Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, open since 1902, which still holds one of the great collections of the ancient world.
- Finish in medieval Cairo on Al Muizz Street and in Khan El Khalili, the old bazaar, with time to shop before your flight.
Tour Route
Can you leave Cairo Airport during a layover?
Often yes, but it depends on your passport and ticket, not on us. Leaving the airport means entering Egypt, so you have to meet the entry rules for your nationality and allow time for arrival and departure formalities. Check the visa rules for your nationality, and your airline's transit conditions, before you fly.
The Egypt entry visa is not included in the price. If you are unsure whether you can leave the airport, ask your airline or the Egyptian embassy first, and book once you have a clear answer.
How long a layover do you need for a Cairo stopover tour?
This tour has seven stops and lunch, so it needs a long daytime layover. We do not set one fixed number of hours, because flights, terminals and traffic differ. Send us your arrival and departure times and we will tell you honestly whether the whole program fits.
We plan from your departure backwards, keeping enough margin to reach the airport, check in and pass security without rushing. If your layover is shorter, the pyramids-only airport tour is the better choice, and we will say so.
What happens to your luggage on a stopover tour?
The easiest layover is one where your checked bags travel straight to your final destination and you leave the airport with hand luggage only. Whether that happens depends on your ticket and the airlines involved, so ask your airline before you fly. If you must collect your bags, tell us when you book.
How is this tour different from the other Cairo Airport tours?
The stopover tour is our widest airport tour: Giza, two museums and the old city in one day, with each stop at a focused pace. The other airport tours take one theme and give it more time, which suits a shorter layover or a second visit to Cairo.
- Pyramids only: the Giza Pyramids tour from Cairo Airport covers the plateau, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
- Older pyramids: the Memphis, Saqqara and Dahshur tour from Cairo Airport goes south to the Step, Bent and Red Pyramids.
- City and museums: the Cairo museums, Citadel and Khan El Khalili tour from the airport skips Giza for the Citadel and the royal mummies.
- Staying overnight? Our hotel-pickup Cairo day tours start and end at your hotel and allow a slower pace.
Tour Itinerary
The fullest of our airport tours: Giza and two museums before and after lunch, then the old city, with the day planned around your departure time.
After you land and clear arrival formalities, your private Egyptologist guide meets you at Cairo International Airport and walks you to an air-conditioned car. Send us both flight numbers and times when you book, so the day is planned backwards from your departure rather than forwards from your arrival.
The plateau holds the three main pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, plus smaller queens' pyramids. Khufu's Great Pyramid, finished around 2560 BC, stayed the tallest building on earth for nearly four thousand years. Your guide explains how it was built and where to stand for the best views.
The Sphinx, carved from the bedrock and generally linked to King Khafre, lies beside the causeway to his pyramid. Next to it stands the Valley Temple, built of huge granite blocks, where the king's funeral rites are thought to have begun. Between the Sphinx's paws is the Dream Stele of Thutmose IV.
A short drive from the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest museum devoted to a single civilization. On a layover you focus on the essentials: the colossal Ramses II, the Grand Staircase lined with royal statues, and the galleries where Tutankhamun's treasures are shown together.
Lunch is included at a restaurant looking out on the pyramids or the Nile. It is the only real sit-down break of the day, and a good moment to tell your guide what matters most to you in the afternoon, so the remaining time goes where you want it.
Opened in 1902, the museum on Tahrir Square is the older home of Egypt's antiquities and still holds thousands of objects, from Old Kingdom statues to the gold of the royal tombs at Tanis. With limited time, your guide takes a short route through its strongest rooms.
Laid out under the Fatimids in the 10th century, Al Muizz Street runs through the heart of Historic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. You walk past mosques, madrasas and public fountains from the Fatimid, Ayyubid and Mamluk eras, many of them carefully restored.
The bazaar grew around a merchants' inn built in the late 14th century and is still a working market. Browse for spices, brass lamps, perfume bottles and silver, and keep in mind that whatever you buy has to fit your airline's baggage allowance.
Your driver takes you straight back to Cairo International Airport for your departure. The guide, car, lunch, bottled water and entrance fees are already covered, so your Egypt entry visa and any extras you choose are the only costs left to plan for.
