Tour Overview

This private day trip takes you about 95 km southwest of Cairo to Fayoum, a green oasis of fields and lakes on the edge of the Western Desert. You see Lake Qarun, one of the oldest lakes in Egypt, and the protected area of Wadi El Rayan, with its desert lakes, dunes and the small waterfalls often called the only ones in Egypt. It is a nature day rather than a monuments day, with an Egyptologist guide, private car and lunch included.

Tour Highlights

  • Leave Cairo early for Fayoum, where a branch of the Nile called the Bahr Yussef has watered fields, palm groves and orchards since the time of the pharaohs.
  • Stand on the shore of Lake Qarun, a large saltwater lake left from the ancient Lake Moeris, with flocks of water birds in the cooler months.
  • See the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan, where water spills over a low rocky step between two lakes in the middle of the desert.
  • Look out over the reserve's sand dunes, springs and open desert, a quiet landscape very different from the streets and traffic of Cairo.
  • Sit down to lunch at a local restaurant in Fayoum, included in the price, before your driver takes you back to your hotel.

Is the Fayoum Oasis day trip worth it?

Yes, if you have already seen the pyramids and museums and want a day of open landscape. Fayoum gives you lakes, fields, desert and waterfalls within a day's drive of Cairo. It suits families, photographers and anyone who needs a break from monuments and city traffic.

It is a gentle day. You spend most of your time looking at scenery and walking short distances, not climbing into tombs or waiting in lines. If you want more action in the same region, the Wadi El Hitan safari, described at the end of this page, adds 4x4 dune driving, sandboarding and whale fossils.

What is Lake Qarun?

Lake Qarun is a saltwater lake in the north of the Fayoum basin and one of the oldest lakes in Egypt. It is the shrunken remains of Lake Moeris, which in ancient times filled much of the basin. Its name links it to Qarun, a rich man of legend.

Greek writers admired Lake Moeris, and Herodotus described it in his history. Under the early Ptolemies, part of the lake was drained to make new farmland, and towns grew up on the old shoreline. Today the lake is an important stop for water birds traveling between Europe and Africa.

What can you see at Wadi El Rayan?

Wadi El Rayan is a protected area in the desert southwest of the Fayoum farmland. Its two lakes and the waterfalls between them are the main sights, but the reserve also has dunes, natural springs and rocks full of marine fossils from the time when this desert lay under the sea.

  • The waterfalls: a low, wide cascade where the upper lake spills into the lower one.
  • The dunes: golden sand slopes that come right down to the water's edge.
  • Wildlife: the reserve shelters shy desert animals such as foxes and gazelles, which are rarely seen by day.

Is the Fayoum trip suitable for children and older travelers?

Yes. Most of the day is spent in a private car and on short, easy walks at the lake and the waterfalls, with no climbing or long hikes. The rocks near the falls can be wet and uneven, so wear good shoes, and bring a hat for the sun.

Fayoum Oasis or Wadi El Hitan: which trip should you choose?

Choose this trip for a relaxed day of lakes and waterfalls with an Egyptologist guide. Choose the Wadi El Hitan desert safari if you want the UNESCO-listed whale fossils plus 4x4 dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride and a barbecue lunch at a Bedouin camp. Tour Itinerary

A full day outside Cairo with a very early start: the lake first, then the desert lakes and waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan, and lunch before you head back.

1
Early morning Very early pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza

Your Egyptologist guide and driver meet you at your hotel in a modern private air-conditioned car. The drive southwest to Fayoum covers about 95 km. As the city falls behind, the road crosses open desert before the green of the oasis appears, and your guide explains how Fayoum has been farmed since ancient times.

2
Morning Lake Qarun

Lake Qarun lies at the lowest point of the Fayoum basin, below sea level. It is what remains of Lake Moeris, a much larger lake that the kings of the Middle Kingdom worked to control with canals. Today its water is salty, its shores are quiet, and in winter it draws many migrating birds.

3
Late morning Wadi El Rayan Protected Area

Wadi El Rayan is a desert depression where two lakes formed in the 20th century, fed by water carried from Fayoum's fields. Around them you find sand dunes, springs, desert plants and rock full of marine fossils, all protected by law. Your guide explains how a lake ended up in the middle of the sand.

4
Midday The Wadi El Rayan waterfalls

Between the upper and lower lakes, water drops over a low rock shelf to make the falls. They are not tall, but moving water in open desert is a rare sight in Egypt. You have time to walk along the rocks, photograph the lakes against the dunes, and ask about the reserve's wildlife.

5
Afternoon Lunch at a local restaurant

Lunch is served at a local restaurant in Fayoum and is included in the price. Fayoum is a farming region, so it is a good moment to ask your guide about what grows here and about daily life in the oasis villages you passed on the way.

6
Late afternoon Drive back to Cairo

After lunch your driver takes you back to your hotel in Cairo or Giza. The guide, car, lunch, bottled water and entrance fees are covered by the price, so you only need cash for tips, optional extras and anything you choose to buy along the way.
