Tour Route
What is the difference between the VIP and the standard GEM tour?
Both are private half-day visits to the Grand Egyptian Museum with an Egyptologist, the GEM ticket, lunch and pickup from your hotel or the airport. The VIP tour runs only from Sunday to Thursday, while the standard half-day tour runs every day of the week.
Choose the VIP tour if your dates fall on a weekday and you want this weekday format. If you are in Cairo over a Friday or Saturday, our standard Grand Egyptian Museum half-day tour covers the same museum on any day. Ask us when you book and we will tell you exactly what the VIP option includes on your date.
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum the same as the Egyptian Museum?
No. The Grand Egyptian Museum is the new museum at Giza, near the pyramids. The Egyptian Museum is the older museum in Tahrir Square in Downtown Cairo, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization is a third museum in Fustat. Each holds a different collection:
- GEM, Giza: the Tutankhamun collection, the Khufu boat, the colossal Ramses II and around 100,000 objects. This tour.
- Egyptian Museum, Tahrir: the historic collection, with the Narmer Palette and the treasures of Tanis.
- NMEC, Fustat: Egyptian civilization across all its eras, and the hall of the royal mummies.
What can you see at the Grand Egyptian Museum?
The GEM is devoted entirely to ancient Egypt, with objects from prehistory to the Greek and Roman period. In a half day with a guide, you can cover its most important spaces and still have time for one or two collections you care about most:
- The colossal Ramses II: the granite statue that once stood in front of Cairo's main railway station.
- Tutankhamun's treasures: the contents of the boy king's tomb, now displayed together at the GEM.
- The Khufu boat: a 4,500-year-old wooden vessel found beside the Great Pyramid.
- Royal statues: kings, queens and gods from across three thousand years of Egyptian history.
What else can you do in Cairo after the GEM?
The VIP tour ends after lunch, which leaves your afternoon free. A natural next step is to see the sites the museum explains, starting with the pyramids just up the road, or to explore the historic city on another day.
For the pyramids and the Sphinx in a short visit, book the half-day Giza pyramids tour. To meet the royal mummies, the Best of Cairo tour with the NMEC combines Giza, the GEM and the civilization museum in one full day. If the VIP dates do not suit you, the standard Grand Egyptian Museum half-day tour runs every day.
Tour Itinerary
A weekday half day with one focus, the GEM, and a guide who is with you throughout.
After breakfast, your personal Egyptologist guide meets you at your hotel in Cairo or Giza, or at Cairo Airport, and a private air-conditioned car drives you to the museum at Giza. The drive is a good time to talk through what you want to see, so the visit has a clear plan from the start.
On arrival, your guide accompanies you into the GEM. The entrance spaces introduce the museum's scale with colossal royal statues, and your guide explains how the collection was gathered from sites across Egypt and why the museum was built here, on the edge of the Giza plateau.
The heart of the tour is a guided walk through the galleries devoted to the gods and kings of ancient Egypt. Your Egyptologist adapts the route to your pace and interests, whether that means more time with Tutankhamun's treasures, the royal statues, everyday objects or the art of writing.
When the museum visit ends, you sit down to lunch at a local restaurant in Giza that looks out toward the pyramids. Lunch is included, and it is a calm way to round off a morning of walking and looking.
After lunch, your driver takes you back to your hotel in Cairo or Giza, or to Cairo Airport if you have a flight. The guide, car, GEM ticket, lunch, bottled water, taxes and service charges are already covered in the price.
