Tour Overview
This private half-day tour takes you to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at Giza, the new national museum on the edge of the pyramids plateau. Your private Egyptologist guide and an air-conditioned car collect you from your hotel or from Cairo Airport after breakfast, your GEM entry ticket is included, and lunch follows at a restaurant with a view of the pyramids. It is a museum-focused half day: you do not walk the pyramids plateau, which keeps the tour shorter and lighter than our full-day GEM and pyramids combination.
Tour Highlights
- Spend the whole visit inside the Grand Egyptian Museum, built at Giza to hold more than 100,000 objects from about seven thousand years of Egyptian history.
- See the colossal granite statue of Ramses II, which stood for decades in front of Cairo's main railway station before it was moved to the museum.
- Look closely at the 4,500-year-old boat of King Khufu, found in a sealed pit beside the Great Pyramid and now shown in its own gallery.
- Find the victory column of King Merenptah, the son and successor of Ramses II, and the royal statues that line the museum's great public spaces.
- Sit down for lunch at a restaurant facing the pyramids after the visit, then head back to your hotel or to the airport with half the day still free.
Tour Route
Is a half day enough for the Grand Egyptian Museum?
A half day is enough to see the essentials of the GEM well with a guide: the great hall, the main galleries, the Khufu boat and the pieces you care about most. Nobody sees everything in one visit, so a guided route matters more than extra hours.
The museum is very large, and much of the visit is spent walking between galleries. Doing it as a half day, with lunch straight afterward, keeps you fresh enough to take in what you see rather than rushing through the last rooms.
What is the difference between the GEM, the Egyptian Museum and the NMEC?
The Grand Egyptian Museum is the new museum at Giza, beside the pyramids. It is a different place from the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square and from the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, and each one holds different collections:
- Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), Giza: the complete Tutankhamun collection, the Khufu boat, the colossal Ramses II and over 100,000 objects. This tour.
- Egyptian Museum, Tahrir: the historic museum in Downtown Cairo, with the Narmer Palette, the Old Kingdom statues and the treasures of Tanis.
- NMEC, Fustat: the museum of Egyptian civilization through all its eras, home of the royal mummies of the New Kingdom pharaohs.
How is this tour different from the other GEM tours?
This tour is the GEM only, in a half day, with your museum ticket and lunch already included. It does not go up onto the Giza plateau, so you see the pyramids from the lunch table rather than walking among them.
If you want the museum and the pyramids on the same day, book the Grand Egyptian Museum and Pyramids tour, a full day that adds the plateau and the Sphinx. The Grand Egyptian Museum VIP tour follows a similar half-day plan but runs only from Sunday to Thursday. For the older collection in Tahrir, see the Egyptian Museum half-day tour.
Is this tour a good fit for a Cairo layover?
It can be. Pickup is available from Cairo Airport as well as from hotels, the tour lasts half a day, and lunch is already included, so it suits travelers with a long connection or a free morning before an evening flight.
Send us your flight times when you book, so we can confirm that the tour fits safely around them. You will need to pass through Egyptian immigration to leave the airport, so check the visa rules for your passport before you travel.
Tour Itinerary
One museum, one meal and a short drive at each end: a half day built around the GEM alone.
After breakfast, your private Egyptologist guide meets you at your hotel in Cairo or Giza, or at Cairo Airport if you are arriving or connecting, and an air-conditioned car drives you to the museum at Giza. Tell your guide what you most want to see so the route can be planned before you go in.
The visit begins in the museum's vast entrance spaces, where the giant statue of Ramses II and the victory column of Merenptah introduce the scale of the place. Your guide explains who these kings were, how they shaped the New Kingdom and why their monuments were brought here from across Egypt.
Next, you move through the galleries, arranged by era and theme, and visit the hall of King Khufu's boat, one of the oldest and largest wooden vessels to survive from the ancient world. With over 100,000 objects in the collection, your guide chooses a route that matches your interests and your energy.
After the museum, lunch at a local restaurant in Giza with a view of the pyramids is included. It is a relaxed break after a lot of walking indoors, and a good moment to ask your guide the questions that came up in the galleries.
After lunch, your driver takes you back to your hotel in Cairo or Giza, or to Cairo Airport for your next flight. Your guide, car, GEM ticket, lunch, bottled water and service charges are all prepaid, so there is nothing to settle on the day.
