Tour Overview
This private 2-day tour flies you from Luxor to Cairo for the Giza Pyramids and the city's two great museums, then takes you north to Alexandria on the Mediterranean before the flight back. Your night is in a 5-star hotel in Cairo. Both domestic flights, a private Egyptologist guide, a private car, two lunches and the entrance fees are included, and the trip ends at your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise.
Tour Highlights
- Walk the Giza plateau with an Egyptologist: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Sphinx with the face of Khafre, and Khafre's granite Valley Temple.
- See the complete Tutankhamun collection and the colossal Ramses II at the Grand Egyptian Museum, then the older national collection at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir.
- Stand where the ancient Pharos lighthouse once rose, at Qaitbay Citadel, the 15th-century Mamluk fort that guards Alexandria's eastern harbor.
- Go underground into the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, where Egyptian gods are carved in Roman dress, a rare mix of three cultures in one tomb.
- Finish at Pompey's Pillar and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern library built in memory of the ancient one, before flying back to Luxor.
Tour Route
Is a 2-day Cairo and Alexandria trip from Luxor worth it?
Yes, if you are based in Luxor and want both the pyramids and the Mediterranean in one short trip. Flying both ways saves two long overland journeys, and Alexandria, with its Greek, Roman and Mamluk history, is a real contrast after several days of Luxor's temples.
What do you see in Alexandria in one day?
Four sites, each with its entrance fee included, plus lunch at a local restaurant. Together they span almost two thousand years, from Roman tombs and a Mamluk sea fort to a modern library, and your guide links them into one story of the city.
- Qaitbay Citadel: a 15th-century fort on the site of the Pharos lighthouse.
- Kom El Shoqafa: Roman-era catacombs mixing Egyptian, Greek and Roman art.
- Pompey's Pillar: a Roman column of red granite.
- Bibliotheca Alexandrina: the modern library on the seafront.
Where do you stay in Cairo?
You spend one night in a 5-star hotel in Cairo, included in the price, with breakfast before you leave for Alexandria on day two. We confirm the hotel when you book. Dinner that evening is not included, so you are free to eat at the hotel or go out.
What else can you add to a Cairo trip from Luxor?
If you want Saqqara and Old Cairo too, the 3-day Cairo trip from Luxor spreads the city over two full days. To pair the pyramids with Ramses II's great temples instead, see Cairo and Abu Simbel in two days, and read our Cairo travel guide before you go.
Tour Itinerary
Two full days: Cairo's pharaonic sights on the first, Alexandria's Greek, Roman and Mamluk past on the second, with a flight at each end.
Your domestic flight from Luxor to Cairo is booked for you. When you land, our representative meets you at Cairo Airport with your private Egyptologist guide and driver. The sightseeing starts straight from the airport, so there is no hotel stop until the end of the day.
The Giza plateau was the royal burial ground of the Fourth Dynasty. You see the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, then the Sphinx, carved from the bedrock with a lion's body and Khafre's face, and the Valley Temple, built of massive granite blocks.
Next door to the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest museum in the world devoted to one civilization. The colossal Ramses II stands in the main hall, the Hanging Obelisk marks the entrance, and the full Tutankhamun collection is shown together. Your guide takes you straight to the highlights.
Lunch is at a restaurant with a view of the Pyramids or the Nile and is included in the price. It is a real sit-down break in the middle of a busy day, before you head downtown for the afternoon museum.
Downtown, the Egyptian Museum has held the national collection for more than a century, from Old Kingdom statues to painted coffins and jewelry. Afterward you check in to your 5-star hotel in Cairo, and the evening is yours to spend as you like.
After breakfast and check-out, you drive north with your guide to Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC. Under the Ptolemies it became Egypt's capital and a center of Greek learning, and it is still the country's main Mediterranean port.
First, Qaitbay Citadel, built by the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay in the 1470s on the site of the ancient lighthouse, partly from its fallen stone. Then the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a Roman-era tomb cut deep into the rock, where Anubis appears in the armor of a Roman soldier.
Lunch is at a local restaurant in the city and is included in the price. Alexandria is known for its fish and seafood, so ask your guide what is fresh that day before you continue to the two afternoon sites.
Despite its name, Pompey's Pillar is a single column of red Aswan granite raised around 300 AD in honor of Emperor Diocletian. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, opened in 2002, recalls the great library of the ancient city, with a vast tilted reading room facing the sea.
You drive back to Cairo Airport for the flight to Luxor. There, a driver meets you in an air-conditioned car and takes you to your hotel or Nile cruise. Day two is long, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a layer.

Yes. The guide and car are only for you and your companions. The per-person price drops as your group grows, because the car, guide and hotel costs are shared, and it changes by season, mainly because domestic airfares rise in the busy winter months.
Yes, more than most Egypt trips. Alexandria sits on the Mediterranean and is usually milder than Luxor or Cairo in summer, although Giza is hot and exposed in the middle of the day. Summer is also when airfares, and so the prices for this tour, tend to be at their lowest.
