Tour Route
Is 3 days in Cairo from Luxor enough?
For the main sights, yes. Day one covers Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara; day two covers the Egyptian Museum, Old Cairo, the royal mummies and the medieval bazaar. Day three is a travel day. You see the essential Cairo without the rush of a one-day flying visit.
What is the difference between the three Cairo museums on this trip?
Each has its own job. The Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza holds Tutankhamun's full collection. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square keeps the older national collection. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat tells Egypt's story across every period and houses the royal mummies.
Where do you stay, and which meals are included?
You spend two nights in a 5-star hotel in Cairo, with breakfast on days two and three. Lunch is included on both sightseeing days: on day one at a restaurant overlooking the Pyramids or the Nile, on day two at a local restaurant in Cairo. Dinners are not included, so your evenings are free.
What else can you combine with this trip?
With your evenings free, you could add a dinner cruise on the Nile in Cairo. Our Cairo travel guide covers the city in more depth, and our Egypt tour packages combine Cairo with Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise in one trip.
Tour Itinerary
Two full sightseeing days in Cairo, with the flight from Luxor at the start and a slower final morning before the flight back.
A driver collects you from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise for the domestic flight to Cairo. Your private Egyptologist guide meets you at Cairo Airport and takes you by air-conditioned car straight to Giza, so sightseeing starts as soon as you land.
The Great Pyramid of Khufu, about 146 meters high when it was finished, is the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Nearby stand the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx with Thutmose IV's Dream Stela between its paws, and Khafre's Valley Temple of polished granite.
Next to the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum shows the complete Tutankhamun collection together for the first time, with the 11-meter Ramses II in the main hall and the Hanging Obelisk at the entrance. Your guide focuses on the galleries that matter most.
Lunch is at a restaurant overlooking the Pyramids or the Nile and is included in the price. It is a proper sit-down break between the museum and the short drive south to Saqqara, where you spend the rest of the afternoon.
At Saqqara, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser rises in six stages to about 62 meters. Built in the Third Dynasty, it is where Egyptian pyramid building began. Afterward you check in to your 5-star hotel in Cairo for the night.
After breakfast, your guide takes you to the Egyptian Museum, opened downtown more than a century ago. Its two floors hold statues, coffins, jewelry and papyri from every period of pharaonic history, much of it still in the original wooden cases.
Lunch is at a local restaurant in Cairo and is included in the price. It is a good chance to try everyday Egyptian dishes such as koshari, molokhia or grilled meats, away from the busy tourist sites of the morning.
The Hanging Church takes its name from its nave, built over the gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon. Nearby are the Ben Ezra Synagogue, where the Cairo Geniza manuscripts were found, and the Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-Aas, founded in 641 AD.
In Fustat, this museum tells Egypt's story from prehistory to today. Its Royal Mummies Hall holds the mummies of kings and queens such as Ramses II and Hatshepsut, moved here from the Egyptian Museum in a public parade in 2021.
You finish in Islamic Cairo. Al Muizz Street, laid out under the Fatimids in the 10th century, is lined with mosques, madrasas and old houses, and it leads to Khan El Khalili, the bazaar founded in the 14th century. Then you return to your hotel for the second night.
Breakfast is at the hotel, then you check out and are driven to Cairo Airport for the flight to Luxor. There is no sightseeing on this day; depending on the flight time, you may have a free morning to rest or walk.
