Is a day trip from Luxor to Cairo by plane worth it?

Yes, if Luxor is your base and you have only one day for Cairo. Flying removes the long overland journey, so you can see the Giza Pyramids, two major museums and the old bazaar, then be back in Luxor the same night. The trade-off is pace: it is a full day with little free time.

What do you see in Cairo in one day?

Five stops, in this order: the Giza plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum, lunch, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, and medieval Cairo around Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili. Entrance fees for all of these sites are in the price.

  • Giza Pyramids: the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum: the Tutankhamun galleries and the giant statue of Ramses II.
  • Egyptian Museum: the original national collection in the center of Cairo.
  • Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili: Fatimid and Mamluk Cairo and the city's best-known bazaar.

How do the flights work on a Cairo day trip?

We book both domestic flights and handle every transfer. A driver takes you from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise to the airport, your guide meets you in Cairo, and a driver brings you back from Luxor Airport at the end of the day. Flight times follow the schedule on your date. Carry your passport.

Why does the price of this trip change by season?

Most of the cost is the two domestic flights, and airfares between Luxor and Cairo climb in the busy winter months and over Christmas and New Year. The per-person price also falls as your group grows, because the guide and car are shared. Summer dates are usually the lowest.

What else can you do from Luxor?

If one day in Cairo feels too short, the 3-day Cairo trip from Luxor by plane adds Saqqara, Old Cairo and the royal mummies. Our Cairo travel guide helps you plan, and our Luxor day tours cover the temples back in Luxor.

Tour Itinerary

A long, full day: two flights with some of Cairo's biggest sights in between, so the pace is brisk from start to finish.

1
Morning Pickup in Luxor and flight to Cairo

Our driver collects you from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise for the domestic flight north; the tickets are booked for you. When you land in Cairo, your private Egyptologist guide and air-conditioned car are waiting, so no time is lost at the airport.

2
Morning The Giza Pyramids and the Great Pyramid

The plateau holds the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. Your guide explains how the Fourth Dynasty kings built them, and why the Great Pyramid, about 146 meters tall when finished, stayed the tallest building in the world for nearly four thousand years.

3
Morning The Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple

Below the pyramids, the Sphinx is carved from the bedrock with a lion's body and, most scholars agree, the face of King Khafre. Between its paws stands the Dream Stela of Thutmose IV. Next to it, Khafre's Valley Temple, built of huge granite blocks, is where the king's body was received before burial.

4
Late morning The Grand Egyptian Museum

A short drive away, the Grand Egyptian Museum faces the pyramids. The colossal Ramses II stands in the main hall, a grand staircase of royal statues climbs to the galleries, and the full Tutankhamun collection is shown together. Your guide picks the key rooms for the time available.

5
Midday Lunch with a Pyramids or Nile view

Lunch is served at a restaurant overlooking the Pyramids or the Nile. It is included in the price and gives you a proper sit-down break between the two museums, out of the sun and off your feet, before the afternoon in central Cairo.

6
Afternoon The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square

Downtown, the Egyptian Museum has displayed the country's antiquities for more than a century. Its galleries feel old-fashioned, and that is part of their charm: statues, painted coffins, jewelry and papyri from the Old Kingdom to the Roman period, packed into the original wooden cases.

7
Late afternoon Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili

Then into Islamic Cairo. Al Muizz Street, laid out under the Fatimids in the 10th century, is lined with mosques, madrasas and old merchant houses. It leads to Khan El Khalili, the 14th-century bazaar, where you can shop for spices, brass and silver or stop for tea.

8
End of day Flight back to Luxor

Your guide and driver take you to Cairo Airport for the return flight. In Luxor, a driver meets you and drops you at your hotel or Nile cruise. It is a long day, but you sleep in your own bed that night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about this tour. For anything else, message us on WhatsApp — we reply fast.

Where does the Cairo day trip from Luxor start?

It starts at your hotel or Nile cruise in Luxor. Our driver takes you to Luxor Airport for the flight, your guide meets you when you land in Cairo, and at the end of the day a driver collects you at Luxor Airport and drops you back where you are staying.

Are the flights, lunch and entrance fees included?

Yes. The price includes return domestic flights between Luxor and Cairo, all transfers in a private air-conditioned vehicle, a private Egyptologist guide, lunch, mineral water in the car, and entrance fees to every site in the program. Tips and anything not listed in the program are extra.

Is this a private tour, and why does the price vary?

Yes, it is private: the guide and car are only for you and your companions. The per-person price drops as your group grows, since the car and guide are shared, and it changes by season because domestic airfares rise in the busy months.

Do I see both the Grand Egyptian Museum and the old Egyptian Museum?

Yes, both are on the program. The Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza holds Tutankhamun's treasures and the colossal Ramses II, while the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square keeps much of the older national collection. In one day, your guide focuses on the highlights of each.

Is Avicon Travel a licensed tour operator?

Yes. Avicon Travel is a Class "A" travel agency licensed by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism under License No. 1962 and registered since 2010. Our office and team are in Karnak, Luxor, so the guides, drivers and cars on this tour are our own local team, not a booking desk abroad.
