Tour Overview
This 2-day safari takes you from Cairo into Egypt's Western Desert, with one night camping under the stars. A private car drives you to Bahariya Oasis, about 350 km away, where a desert guide takes over in a 4x4. You see the Black Desert, a hot spring, Crystal Mountain, the Valley of Agabat and the chalk shapes of the White Desert, then sleep in a tent after a Bedouin-style BBQ dinner.
Tour Highlights
- Cross the Black Desert, where dark volcanic stones cover the hills and give the sand a color you will not see elsewhere in Egypt.
- Explore the White Desert National Park, with wind-carved chalk rocks shaped like mushrooms, camels and even a giant chicken.
- Try sandboarding on the soft dunes of the Valley of Agabat, among white limestone cliffs left behind by an ancient sea.
- Spend the night at a desert camp with a BBQ dinner around the fire, then wake up to watch the sunrise over the dunes.
- Soak in natural springs at El Haize and on the way back, and pass palm groves and salt lakes in Bahariya Oasis.
Tour Route
Is the White Desert worth an overnight trip from Cairo?
Yes, if you want a real desert experience rather than a short ride near the pyramids. The drive is long, but the night in camp is the point: you see the White Desert in late afternoon light, eat dinner by the fire and wake to a desert sunrise. A day trip cannot give you that.
What is the difference between the Black and White Deserts?
The Black Desert takes its color from volcanic stones and dust that cover its hills. The White Desert is a plain of white chalk carved by wind into towers and shapes. They lie close to each other in the Western Desert, between Bahariya and Farafra, so one safari covers both.
Between them, Crystal Mountain and the Valley of Agabat add quartz crystals and white limestone cliffs, so in one afternoon you see four very different desert landscapes.
What should you pack for a night in the desert?
Tents, sleeping bags and mattresses are provided, so you only need personal items. Desert nights can be cold, especially in winter, even after a warm day, so bring warm layers. Pack a swimsuit and a small towel for the hot springs, plus a hat and sunscreen.
- Warm layers: a fleece or jacket for the evening and early morning.
- Swimsuit and towel: for El Haize and the spring on day two.
- Flashlight: useful around camp after dark.
- Closed shoes: for walking on sand and rocks and for sandboarding.
What other desert trips can you take from Cairo?
If one night feels like too much, the Wadi El Hitan desert safari shows you fossil whales and dunes in a single day, and the Fayoum Oasis day trip adds lakes and waterfalls. See all our Cairo day tours to compare.
Tour Itinerary
Day one is a long drive followed by an afternoon of off-road stops and a night in camp; day two is a slow morning and the drive home.
A private air-conditioned car picks you up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza for the drive of about 350 km to Bahariya Oasis, with two short coffee stops on the way. Along the road you pass the railway that carries iron ore from Bahariya to the steel works at Helwan.
In Bahariya you switch to a private 4x4 and meet your desert guide. The first stop is the Black Desert, where small volcanic stones and dark dust cap the hills and cover the sand, so the ground looks almost burned. It is one of the most unusual landscapes in Egypt.
At El Haize Oasis you can take a dip in a natural hot spring. In Roman times this was a busy settlement, and some of its remains still stand. A traditional Egyptian lunch is served here, and you also visit the small Water Museum, which explains how desert villages depend on underground water.
Next is Crystal Mountain, a low ridge where quartz crystals catch the light. Then you drive into the Valley of Agabat, a wide basin of white limestone cliffs and dunes shaped over millions of years after the sea that once covered this area drained away. Here you can try sandboarding down the dunes.
The White Desert is the highlight of the trip. Wind and sand have carved the white chalk into towers and odd shapes, and your guide points out the famous ones, like the mushroom and the chicken. The colors change as the sun drops, so this is the best light of the day for photos.
You head back to the Black Desert and settle into camp for the night. Dinner is a Bedouin-style BBQ cooked over the fire, and with no city lights around, the sky fills with stars. Tents, sleeping bags and mattresses are all provided, so you do not need to bring camping gear.
You wake early to watch the sun come up over the desert, then have a light breakfast at camp. On the way back to Bahariya you stop at the Bir Sigam hot spring, or in summer at Bir Madi, a cool spring that is more welcome in the heat.
A short drive through Bahariya Oasis takes you past palm groves and natural salt lakes, a green contrast to the open desert of the day before. Then you set off for Cairo in your private car and arrive at your hotel in the late afternoon.

It starts at your hotel in Cairo or Giza, where a private car picks you up for the drive to Bahariya Oasis. Pickup from downtown Cairo and the Giza area is included; other areas can be arranged for an extra charge. On day two you arrive back at your hotel in the late afternoon.
The price covers the private car from Cairo to Bahariya and back, a private 4x4 in the desert, a desert guide, one night in a tent with sleeping bag and mattress, one breakfast, two lunches and one BBQ dinner, mineral water, entrance fees to the sites in the program, and taxes. Tips are extra.
Yes. The car, the 4x4 and your guide are only for you and your companions. The per-person price falls as your group grows, because the vehicles and guide are shared between more people, and it changes by season, with higher prices in the busy winter months and over Christmas and New Year.
It can work for families, but think about it carefully with young children. It involves a long drive each way, bumpy off-road sections in the 4x4 and a night in a tent with simple camping facilities. Tell us your children's ages when you book so we can advise you honestly.
