Tour Overview
This private day tour puts Cairo's two big stories into one day: the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple in the morning, then the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, medieval Al Muizz Street and the Khan El Khalili bazaar in the afternoon. A private Egyptologist and air-conditioned car take you from your Cairo or Giza hotel, with lunch and entrance fees included. It is the classic one-day Cairo overview, for travelers with one day in the city.
Tour Highlights
- Start at the Giza Plateau with the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, explained by your own Egyptologist while the morning is still cool.
- See the Great Sphinx and the granite Valley Temple of Khafre, where the king's funeral rites are thought to have begun before his burial.
- Walk through the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, Egypt's oldest major antiquities museum, still full of statues, coffins and jewelry from every period.
- Stroll down Al Muizz Street, the spine of medieval Cairo, lined with mosques, madrasas and fountain houses built by Fatimid and Mamluk rulers.
- End in the lanes of Khan El Khalili, Cairo's great bazaar since the 14th century, with time for a coffee among the copper, silver and spice stalls.
Tour Route
How is this tour different from the other Cairo and Giza day tours?
This is the tour that combines the pyramids with the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square and the medieval old city. The half-day pyramids tour stops after Giza and lunch, the Giza and Saqqara tour swaps the city for the Step Pyramid, and the Grand Egyptian Museum tour pairs the pyramids with the new museum instead.
Egyptian Museum or Grand Egyptian Museum: which should you choose?
Choose the Grand Egyptian Museum if Tutankhamun's treasures are your priority, since his collection now lives there. Choose this tour if you want the historic museum in Tahrir Square, whose crowded halls still hold one of the world's great collections, together with a first look at Islamic Cairo and the bazaar.
Is one day enough for Cairo and the pyramids?
It is enough for a strong overview, not for everything. This tour covers the essential ancient site, a major museum and the heart of medieval Cairo in one well-ordered day. What it leaves out is Saqqara and Dahshur, the Citadel, Coptic Cairo and the Grand Egyptian Museum, which need days of their own.
What other Cairo tours pair well with this one?
If you have more than one day in Cairo, the city rewards a second and third day. Use this tour as your overview, then go deeper into the sites it only touches or leaves out.
For the new museum and Tutankhamun, book the Grand Egyptian Museum and Pyramids tour. For the earliest pyramids, the Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur day trip fills a full day, and for a relaxed evening, end with the Cairo dinner cruise on the Nile.
Tour Itinerary
A full day that moves from the ancient to the medieval: Giza before lunch, then the museum and the old city in the afternoon.
Your private Egyptologist guide and driver collect you from your hotel in an air-conditioned car, with mineral water on board for the day. Pickup in downtown Cairo and the Giza area is included; other districts carry an extra charge. An early start gives you the plateau at its coolest.
Khufu's Great Pyramid, built from an estimated 2.3 million limestone blocks, originally rose about 146 meters and is the last of the Seven Wonders still standing. Your guide then takes you to Khafre's pyramid, which keeps casing stone near its top, and Menkaure's, the smallest, with its queens' pyramids beside it.
At the bottom of the plateau the Sphinx, carved from the bedrock with a lion's body and a face usually identified as Khafre, faces the sunrise. Beside it, the Valley Temple is built of massive granite blocks with almost no decoration, and is where Khafre's body is thought to have been prepared for burial.
Lunch is at a restaurant overlooking the pyramids or the Nile, and it is included in the price. After a morning on open ground it is a welcome sit-down break, and a chance to ask your guide questions before the drive into central Cairo.
The pink neoclassical museum on Tahrir Square has housed Egypt's antiquities since the early 1900s. Tutankhamun's treasures and the royal mummies have moved to newer museums, but its halls still hold thousands of pieces, from the Narmer Palette to Old Kingdom statues. Your guide picks the highlights for the time you have.
Al Muizz Street ran through the heart of Cairo when the Fatimids founded the city in the 10th century, and later rulers kept building along it. Today it is a walkable open-air gallery of Islamic architecture, with domes, minarets and carved stone facades, including the Qalawun complex, one of the finest Mamluk buildings in the city.
The bazaar grew up around a caravanserai built in the 1380s and has been Cairo's main market ever since. Its covered lanes sell lamps, spices, perfume, silver and textiles, and its old cafes are a good place to rest. Your guide can point you to fair-priced shops and help with bargaining.
Your driver takes you back to your hotel in Cairo or Giza after the bazaar. The guide, car, entrance fees, lunch, water and service charges are already paid, so you only need money for tips and anything you buy in the bazaar.

Yes. The car and the guide are for your group alone, never shared with strangers. Because they cost the same whether two or eight people travel, the per-person price falls as your group grows, and it also changes slightly by season. Prices start from {price} per person.
A fair amount, spread across the day. You walk on sand and gravel at Giza, on stone floors in the museum, and along Al Muizz Street, which is largely pedestrian, before the narrow bazaar lanes. Tell us in advance about any mobility limits so your guide can adjust the order.
