Tour Overview
On this day trip a private air-conditioned car and your own Egyptologist guide take you from your Hurghada hotel to Cairo and back, with no flights and no bus stations. Be ready for a long day: Cairo is more than 450 kilometers away by road, so much of it is spent driving. In Cairo you visit the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, with lunch and entrance fees included.
Tour Highlights
- Travel door to door in a private air-conditioned car with your guide on board from the start, so you can stop when needed and ask questions on the way.
- Stand beside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the one Wonder of the Ancient World that still stands, and see all three main pyramids of Giza.
- Meet the Great Sphinx and walk through Khafre's granite Valley Temple, where the king's funeral rites began more than 4,500 years ago.
- See the 11-meter Ramses II, the Hanging Obelisk and Tutankhamun's complete burial collection in the Grand Egyptian Museum next to the plateau.
- Visit the historic Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, where royal statues and painted coffins fill two floors of an early 20th-century building.
Tour Route
Private car, plane or bus: which Cairo day trip from Hurghada should you choose?
The private car is the road option with the most comfort and flexibility: the same car and guide stay with you all day, from your hotel door and back. It costs far less than flying, but the road takes a large part of the day, so the program in Cairo is shorter.
If time in Cairo matters more than budget, the Cairo day trip from Hurghada by plane adds Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili. The Cairo day trip by bus uses first-class coach seats from Hurghada bus station instead of a private car. To split the drive over two days, see the 2-day Cairo trip by bus.
Is a day trip from Hurghada to Cairo by car worth it?
It is worth it if you have only one free day and want the Pyramids and Tutankhamun without paying for flights. The trade-off is honest: you spend many hours on the road, and the time in Cairo is focused on Giza and two museums. If you can spare a night, two days is easier.
Which sights are on the Cairo day trip by car?
Four visits, all with entrance fees included, chosen so you see the most important places without rushing from one to the next after a long drive. Islamic Cairo and the Khan El Khalili bazaar are not part of this program.
- Giza plateau: the three main pyramids and the six smaller pyramids.
- Sphinx and Valley Temple: Khafre's guardian and his funeral temple.
- Grand Egyptian Museum: Ramses II, the Hanging Obelisk and the Tutankhamun galleries.
- Egyptian Museum: the historic collection in Tahrir Square.
How can you make the long drive easier?
Sleep well the night before and eat breakfast early. Bring a neck pillow, a light jacket for the air-conditioning, sunglasses and a charged phone or a book. Wear comfortable shoes for Giza. Keep your passport with you for the day.
Tour Itinerary
Expect a very long day: an early start and a long drive north, Giza and two museums in Cairo, then the same road back to the Red Sea after dark.
Your driver and Egyptologist guide collect you from your hotel in Hurghada in a private air-conditioned car. The road follows the Red Sea coast and then crosses the desert toward the Nile Valley. Water and soft drinks are on board, and you can take short breaks along the way.
On the Giza plateau stand the pyramids of Khufu, his son Khafre and Menkaure, with six smaller queens' pyramids around them. The Great Pyramid, built around 2560 BC, was the tallest structure on earth for thousands of years. Your guide explains how its stones were quarried, moved and set.
The Sphinx was carved out of the plateau's own limestone, with a lion's body and a royal head usually identified as Khafre. Beside it, his Valley Temple is built of huge granite blocks. This was where the king's body arrived from the Nile and was prepared for burial.
A few minutes away, the Grand Egyptian Museum is aligned with the pyramids. The Hanging Obelisk stands at the entrance, a colossal Ramses II greets you in the atrium, and the Tutankhamun galleries show the young king's treasures together. Your guide picks a route through the key halls.
Lunch is included at a restaurant in Cairo. It is a welcome break after the morning at Giza: time to sit down out of the sun, drink plenty of water and rest your feet before the last visit of the day.
The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square opened in 1902 and was the main home of the country's antiquities for more than a century. Its two floors still hold statues of kings and gods, painted coffins, papyri and jewelry, many in their original wooden showcases.
After the museum your driver takes you back to Hurghada in the same private car and drops you at your hotel. The return drive is long and you arrive late at night, so many travelers simply rest or sleep on the way back.
