Tour Overview
This two-day trip takes you from Hurghada to Cairo on first-class bus tickets, with a night in a 5-star Cairo hotel and a private Egyptologist guide for all the sightseeing. It is the lower-cost way to get a full Cairo program: you trade flights for a long coach ride each way, which you share with other passengers. Day one covers Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara; day two the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel, the royal mummies and Khan El Khalili.
Tour Highlights
- Save on flights with first-class bus seats both ways, and let the night in Cairo break up the long road.
- Stand under Khufu's Great Pyramid in the morning and in front of Djoser's older Step Pyramid at Saqqara in the afternoon.
- Compare Cairo's antiquities museums: the new Grand Egyptian Museum with Tutankhamun's treasures, and the 1902 Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
- Look out over the city from Saladin's Citadel and walk into the alabaster-lined Mohamed Ali Mosque, seen from across the city.
- Stand before pharaohs such as Ramses II in the Royal Mummies Hall, then browse the lanes of Khan El Khalili before the bus south.
Tour Route
Bus or plane: which 2-day Cairo trip from Hurghada is better for you?
The sightseeing is the same on both. The difference is the journey: the bus costs much less but uses a large part of day one and day two, on a ticketed coach shared with other passengers. Flying costs more and gives you more energy for the sites.
For the same program with flights, see the 2-day Cairo trip from Hurghada by plane. With only one free day, the Cairo day trip by bus covers Giza, both big museums and Khan El Khalili, and the day trip by private car keeps one car with you door to door.
Is two days by bus better than a one-day bus trip?
For most people, yes. Doing the road both ways in one day leaves little energy for Cairo. With a night in the city, each bus ride sits at one end of a separate day, and you have time for Saqqara, the Citadel and the royal mummies too.
What should you bring on a 2-day bus trip to Cairo?
Pack a small overnight bag, your passport for the hotel, comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses. A scarf or light layer is useful for the bus air-conditioning and the Mohamed Ali Mosque, where shoulders and knees should be covered. Keep valuables with you on the bus.
Why does the price change by group size and season?
Your guide, car and hotel make up most of the cost, and the guide and car cost the same for one person or eight. That is why the per-person price falls sharply as your group grows. Rates are higher from October to March, peaking over Christmas and New Year.
Tour Itinerary
The bus rides sit at the start of day one and the end of day two; in between are two full days of sightseeing with your own guide and car.
A private car collects you from your hotel in Hurghada and drops you at Hurghada bus station, where your first-class tickets are waiting. The coach is a regular ticketed service with other passengers on board. At Cairo bus station, your private Egyptologist guide and air-conditioned car meet you.
On the Giza plateau, your guide walks you around the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. Khufu's, raised around 2560 BC, is the last Ancient Wonder still standing. Below it the Sphinx guards Khafre's Valley Temple, whose granite halls were used to prepare the royal body for burial.
Minutes from the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum lines up with the pyramids. You see the Hanging Obelisk, the giant Ramses II in the atrium and the Tutankhamun galleries, where the boy king's gold mask, chariots and shrines are now shown side by side.
Lunch is at a local restaurant, then you continue to Saqqara, the cemetery of Egypt's first capital, Memphis. King Djoser's architect Imhotep designed the Step Pyramid here: six stone tiers, about 62 meters high, built about a century before the Great Pyramid.
Your driver takes you to your 5-star hotel in Cairo for the night, with breakfast included the next morning and the evening free. After the bus ride and a long day outdoors, an early night makes day two much more pleasant.
After breakfast you check out and meet your guide again. The day starts at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, one of the oldest archaeological museums in the region, where royal statues, painted coffins and jewelry fill two floors of the 1902 building.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you drive up to the Citadel, the fortress Saladin started in 1176 on a spur of the Muqattam hills. At its top rises the Mohamed Ali Mosque, finished in 1848 in Ottoman style and faced with alabaster.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat covers Egypt's history from prehistory to today. The Royal Mummies Hall holds kings and queens of the New Kingdom, moved here from Tahrir Square in a televised royal procession through the streets of Cairo in 2021.
Your guide ends the tour in Islamic Cairo. Al Muizz Street, the spine of the Fatimid city, is lined with mosques, domes and old merchant houses. Next to it, Khan El Khalili has sold spices, lanterns and silver since Mamluk times in the 14th century.
Your guide and driver take you to Cairo bus station for the first-class bus back to Hurghada. At Hurghada bus station, our driver meets you and drives you to your hotel. It is a late arrival, so keep the next morning free.
