Tour Highlights

  • Visit the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the salmon-colored building opened under Khedive Abbas Helmi II in the early 1900s to hold Egypt's antiquities.
  • See the Narmer Palette, the carved slate that shows a king of Upper Egypt ruling over Lower Egypt, one of the earliest records of a united Egypt.
  • Meet the builders of the Giza pyramids in stone, with statues of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure in the Old Kingdom galleries.
  • Study the near-complete burial of Yuya and Thuya, the parents of Queen Tiye, and the royal treasures of Tanis, including the silver coffin of Psusennes I.
  • Keep it short and focused: one museum, a private guide who plans the route with you, and hotel transfers in Cairo or Giza.

Is the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir still worth visiting?

Yes. The Tutankhamun collection has moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum and the royal mummies to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, but Tahrir still holds a huge collection that spans Egypt's history from before the first pharaohs to the Roman period, displayed in the building where Egyptology grew up.

The Narmer Palette, the Old Kingdom statues, the burial of Yuya and Thuya and the Tanis treasures are reasons on their own. The older galleries also feel very different from the new museums: dense, packed with objects and full of character.

What is the difference between the Egyptian Museum, the GEM and the NMEC?

Cairo now has three major museums of ancient Egypt, and they are easy to mix up. They are in different parts of the city, hold different collections and suit different interests, so it helps to know which is which before you book a tour:

  • Egyptian Museum (Tahrir): the historic museum in Downtown Cairo, open since the early 1900s, with the Narmer Palette, the Old Kingdom statues and the Tanis treasures. This tour.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM): the new museum at Giza, next to the pyramids, home to the complete Tutankhamun collection, the Khufu boat and the colossal Ramses II.
  • National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC): in Fustat, Old Cairo, where the royal mummies of the New Kingdom pharaohs are now shown in a special hall.

What should you not miss at the Egyptian Museum?

The museum holds far more than anyone can see in one visit, and many important pieces sit in plain cases with short labels. A private guide helps you find the best ones quickly. If you only have a half day, make sure these are on your route:

  • Narmer Palette: an early record of the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king.
  • Old Kingdom statues: the kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, plus officials and scribes of the pyramid age.
  • Yuya and Thuya: one of the most complete private burials found in the Valley of the Kings.
  • Tanis treasures: silver coffins and gold masks from the royal tombs of the 21st and 22nd Dynasties.

How is this tour different from the other Cairo museum tours?

This is the only one of our Cairo tours that spends a half day on the Tahrir museum alone, with no other stops. That makes it the shortest and simplest option, and it leaves the rest of your day free for something else.

If Tutankhamun is your priority, book the Grand Egyptian Museum half-day tour at Giza instead. For Tahrir, the Citadel, the royal mummies at the NMEC and Khan El Khalili in one day, choose the Egyptian Museum and Old Cairo tour. The Cairo and Pyramids day tour pairs this museum with the Giza pyramids.

Tour Itinerary

A half day spent entirely inside one museum, with a short drive at each end.

1
Start Pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza

Your private Egyptologist guide meets you at your hotel, and an air-conditioned car drives you to Tahrir Square in Downtown Cairo. On the way, your guide asks what interests you most, from the pyramid age to royal jewelry or writing, so the visit is shaped around it.

2
At the museum Ground floor: from the first kings to the pyramid age

The ground floor runs roughly in time order. You start with the Narmer Palette and early dynastic objects, then move into the Old Kingdom, with statues of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the kings behind the three pyramids of Giza, and the lifelike seated figures of officials and their wives.

3
At the museum Ground floor: the New Kingdom and later periods

Further along, the galleries move through the Middle and New Kingdoms into the Late Period and the Greek and Roman era. Your guide picks out the statues, reliefs and sarcophagi that tell the story of the later dynasties and shows how Egyptian art changed over time.

4
At the museum Upper floor: Yuya and Thuya and the treasures of Tanis

Upstairs, the collection is grouped by theme and by tomb. You see the coffins, furniture and grave goods of Yuya and Thuya, found almost intact, and the treasures of the royal tombs at Tanis, with the silver coffin and gold mask of Psusennes I, along with papyri, jewelry and coffins.

5
End Drive back to your hotel

When the visit is over, your driver takes you back to your hotel in Cairo or Giza. With only half the day used, the rest of it is yours, whether you want to rest, walk around Downtown Cairo or plan an evening out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about this tour. For anything else, message us on WhatsApp — we reply fast.

Where does the Egyptian Museum tour pick you up?

Your guide and driver collect you from your hotel in Downtown Cairo or Giza and bring you back after the visit. Hotels in other parts of Greater Cairo can be served for an extra charge, so send us your hotel name when you book and we will confirm.

What is included in the half-day museum tour?

The price covers your private Egyptologist guide, a private air-conditioned car with driver, hotel pickup and drop-off, and the entrance ticket to the Egyptian Museum. No meal is part of this half-day visit, and personal purchases or anything not listed in the program are extra.

Is this tour private, and why does the price change?

Yes, the guide and car are for your group only. Their cost is the same for two travelers or eight, so the per-person price falls as your group grows, and it also changes between the quieter summer season and the busy winter and holiday months. Prices start from {price} per person.

Is Tutankhamun's gold mask still in the Egyptian Museum?

No. The complete Tutankhamun collection, including the gold mask, is now shown at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, and the royal mummies are at the NMEC. The Tahrir museum keeps much of the rest of the national collection, so it is still well worth a visit.

Is Avicon Travel a licensed tour operator?

Yes. Avicon Travel is a Class "A" travel agency licensed by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism under License No. 1962 and registered since 2010. Our office and team are in Karnak, Luxor, so the guides, drivers and cars on this tour are our own local team, not a booking desk abroad.
