What is the Tanoura show?

The Tanoura is an Egyptian folk dance in which men spin continuously while wearing a tanoura, a full, heavy skirt made of colored panels. It grew from Sufi traditions of turning as a form of devotion, and in Egypt it developed into a stage performance with live music.

The skill lies in the balance and stamina: dancers turn for a long time without losing their footing, while handling the weight of the skirt. The music and the steady rhythm draw you in, and you do not need any Arabic or background knowledge to follow what is happening.

What is Wekalet El Ghouri?

Wekalet El Ghouri is a Mamluk caravanserai built in 1504 by Sultan Qansuh Al Ghuri, one of the last Mamluk rulers of Egypt. Merchants stored their goods around its central courtyard and lodged in the rooms above, close to the markets of medieval Cairo.

It is one of the best preserved buildings of its kind in Cairo, and today it is used as a cultural venue. Seeing a performance here, under the arches of a five-hundred-year-old trading house, is very different from watching folk dance in a hotel ballroom or on a dinner boat.

Is the Tanoura the same as the Turkish whirling dervishes?

They are related but not the same. Both come from Sufi traditions of spinning, but the Turkish Mevlevi ceremony is a religious ritual performed in plain white robes, while the Egyptian Tanoura is a colorful, more theatrical folk performance with lively music and skirts that change shape as the dancer turns.

In Egypt, the Tanoura is part of popular culture, seen at festivals and celebrations as well as on stage. If you have seen whirling dervishes in Turkey, the show at Wekalet El Ghouri gives you a chance to compare the two traditions.

What else can you do in Cairo in the evening?

The Tanoura show is a short evening, so it fits easily after a day of sightseeing. Islamic Cairo is also a good area to spend an afternoon before the show, and Cairo has a few other evening options worth knowing about.

Spend the day before the show on the Islamic Cairo day tour, which ends on Al Muizz Street close to Wekalet El Ghouri. For dinner on the Nile with music and dance, book the Cairo dinner cruise. To see the pyramids lit up at night, try the Giza Pyramids sound and light show.

Tour Itinerary

A short evening plan: a drive into Islamic Cairo, the show, and a drive back to your hotel.

1
Evening Pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza

Our representative meets you at your hotel in Cairo or Giza and takes you by private air-conditioned car into Islamic Cairo, with bottled water on board. The drive through the city in the evening is part of the experience, with the domes and minarets of the old town lit up as you arrive.

2
Evening Arrival at Wekalet El Ghouri

Wekalet El Ghouri was built in 1504, during the reign of the Mamluk sultan Qansuh Al Ghuri, as a wekala, an inn and warehouse for traveling merchants. Goods were stored on the ground floor around the courtyard, and traders slept in the rooms above. Today the old building is used as a cultural venue for music and performance.

3
Evening Egyptian folk music

The performance opens with a group of local musicians playing traditional Egyptian folk music. Drums set the rhythm, and wind and string instruments carry the melodies, some of them rooted in the religious chanting and village music of Egypt. It sets the mood before the dancers appear.

4
Evening The Tanoura whirling dance

Then the Tanoura dancers take the floor, turning steadily for long minutes in heavy skirts sewn from many colored panels. As they spin, the skirts lift and widen, and some dancers raise or separate the layers into whirling shapes. The balance and stamina it takes are remarkable to watch up close.

5
End Drive back to your hotel

After the show, our representative walks you back to the car, and you are driven to your hotel in Cairo or Giza. The transfers, show admission, water, services, charges and taxes are covered, so there is nothing else to arrange for the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about this tour. For anything else, message us on WhatsApp — we reply fast.

Where does the Tanoura show trip pick you up?

Our representative collects you from your hotel in Downtown Cairo or Giza and takes you back after the show. Hotels in other areas of Greater Cairo can be served for an extra charge. Send us your hotel name when you book, and we will confirm the pickup for your evening.

What is included in the Tanoura show price?

The price covers your admission ticket to the show, private air-conditioned transfers from your hotel and back, bottled water, and all services, charges and taxes. Dinner, tips, personal expenses and your hotel accommodation are not included. A representative accompanies you; this is not a guided tour of the area.

Is the trip private, and why does the price change?

Your car and transfers are private for your group, while the show itself is a public performance with other spectators. The transfer cost is shared by your group, so the per-person price falls as the group grows, and it also changes by season. Prices start from {price} per person.

Is the Tanoura show suitable for children?

Yes. The show is music and dance without spoken dialogue, so children follow it easily, and the spinning skirts and drums tend to hold their attention. It fills a short evening, and in winter it is worth bringing a light layer, since Cairo evenings and old stone buildings can feel cool.

Is Avicon Travel a licensed tour operator?

Yes. Avicon Travel is a Class "A" travel agency licensed by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism under License No. 1962 and registered since 2010. Our office and team are in Karnak, Luxor, so the guides, drivers and cars on this tour are our own local team, not a booking desk abroad.
