Tour Overview
This private two-day trip flies you from Hurghada to Cairo and back, and spends one day on the pharaohs and one on Egypt's Mediterranean city. Day one covers the Giza Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, with a night in a 5-star Cairo hotel. Day two goes by road to Alexandria for the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Pompey's Pillar, Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, before your evening flight from Cairo.
Tour Highlights
- See two very different Egypts in two days: the pyramids and pharaohs of Giza, then the Greek and Roman past of Alexandria on the sea.
- Stand before the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Sphinx, then meet Tutankhamun's treasures in the Grand Egyptian Museum next door.
- Walk down a spiral staircase into the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, where Egyptian gods appear in Roman dress on the tomb walls.
- Stand at Qaitbay Citadel, built in the 15th century on the site of the Pharos, the lighthouse counted among the Seven Wonders.
- Have a seafood lunch by the Mediterranean, then finish at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern successor to the ancient Library.
Tour Route
How is this trip different from the 2-day Cairo trip from Hurghada?
Both fly you from Hurghada and give you a night in Cairo. The 2-day Cairo trip spends day two in Cairo, at Saqqara, the Citadel and the royal mummies. This trip spends day two in Alexandria instead, so you trade Islamic Cairo for the Roman catacombs, Qaitbay and the sea.
If you would rather stay in Cairo, choose the 2-day Cairo trip from Hurghada by plane. With one day only, see the Cairo day trip from Hurghada by plane. Already staying in Cairo? The Alexandria day trip from Cairo covers the coast in a day.
Is Alexandria worth a day on a short Egypt trip?
Yes, if you have already seen the pyramids or want variety. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria was the capital of the Ptolemies and a great center of Greek learning. It feels different from Cairo: Mediterranean, breezy and built around a long seafront.
What should you pack for Cairo and Alexandria?
A small overnight bag is enough. Bring your passport for the flights and hotel, comfortable shoes for Giza and the catacomb stairs, a hat and sunglasses. Alexandria is often windy and cooler than Cairo, so a light jacket is useful, especially from November to March.
Why does the price change by season and group size?
Flights and the Cairo hotel cost more from October to March, with a peak over Christmas and New Year, so winter rates are higher. The per-person price also falls as your group grows, since the guide and car cost the same for two travelers or eight.
Tour Itinerary
Day one is Cairo at a steady pace with a night in the city; day two is a long one, with the road to Alexandria and back to Cairo before your flight.
Our representative picks you up from your hotel in Hurghada for the airport and your flight to Cairo. The tickets are arranged for you; bring your passport. At Cairo Airport, your Egyptologist guide meets you with a private air-conditioned car and drives you to the Giza plateau.
Khufu's Great Pyramid, finished around 2560 BC, was the tallest structure made by people for thousands of years. Your guide shows you all three main pyramids, then the Sphinx and Khafre's Valley Temple, where granite halls received the king's body for purification before burial.
Close to the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum lines up with the pyramids. You pass the Hanging Obelisk, meet the 11-meter Ramses II in the atrium and walk through the Tutankhamun galleries, which show the young king's complete burial collection together.
Lunch is included at a restaurant with a view of the Pyramids or the Nile. Afterward you visit the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, opened in 1902, whose two floors of royal statues, coffins and jewelry remain the classic introduction to ancient Egypt.
Your driver takes you to your 5-star hotel in Cairo for the night. The evening is free, and an early night is a good idea, because day two starts with the drive north to the Mediterranean coast and ends with your flight back.
After breakfast and check-out, your private car and guide head north to Alexandria. The first stop is the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a burial complex cut into the rock in the 2nd century AD, where Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles mix in a way found nowhere else.
On a hill nearby stands Pompey's Pillar, a single column of red Aswan granite about 27 meters tall. Despite its name, it was raised around 300 AD in honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian, on the site of the ancient Serapeum temple.
Sultan Qaitbay built this fortress in the 1470s at the tip of the harbor, on the spot where the Pharos lighthouse once stood, reusing some of its stones. After walking its walls above the sea, you sit down to a seafood lunch in Alexandria.
The modern Library of Alexandria opened in 2002 to revive the spirit of the ancient Library founded under the Ptolemies. Its tilted disc-shaped roof faces the sea, and its granite outer wall is carved with letters and symbols from scripts around the world.
Your car and guide drive you back to Cairo Airport for the flight to Hurghada. When you land, a car takes you to your hotel. It is a long final day with a late return, so plan a slow morning by the pool afterward.
