Tour Overview
This private two-day trip flies you from Hurghada to Cairo and back, with a night in a 5-star Cairo hotel in between. The overnight gives you time for far more than a day trip allows. Day one covers the Giza Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara. Day two covers the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel, the mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and Khan El Khalili.
Tour Highlights
- Fly both ways and sleep one night in a 5-star hotel in Cairo, so neither day is spent on the desert road.
- See the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Step Pyramid of Djoser on the same day: the first and the most famous of Egypt's pyramids.
- Walk the Tutankhamun galleries at the Grand Egyptian Museum, then the historic Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square the next morning.
- Climb to Saladin's Citadel and step inside the Mohamed Ali Mosque, whose Ottoman domes and alabaster walls look out over the whole city.
- Meet the royal mummies of the New Kingdom at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, then end in Khan El Khalili before your flight.
Tour Route
Should you go to Cairo from Hurghada for one day or two?
Two days if you can. A day trip can only cover Giza and a few stops before the flight home. With one night in Cairo you add Saqqara, the Citadel and the royal mummies and see it all at an easier pace.
Short on time? The Cairo day trip from Hurghada by plane covers the main sights in one long day. The 2-day Cairo trip by bus follows this same program at a lower price, but with a long bus ride each way. To swap day two for the Mediterranean, see the 2-day Cairo and Alexandria trip.
How are the three museums on this trip different?
The Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza is new and holds the Tutankhamun collection and the colossal Ramses II. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is the original, opened in 1902, with thousands of other pieces. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization adds the royal mummies.
What should you pack for two days in Cairo?
A small overnight bag is enough, since you return to the same hotel in Hurghada. Bring your passport for the flights and hotel, comfortable shoes, a hat and sunglasses, and clothing that covers shoulders and knees for the Mohamed Ali Mosque.
Why is the price higher in winter?
Flights and the Cairo hotel make up most of the cost, and both are pricier from October to March, peaking over Christmas and New Year. The per-person rate also drops as the group grows, because the guide and car are shared. May to September is usually cheapest.
Tour Itinerary
Two full days at a comfortable pace: the pharaohs at Giza and Saqqara on the first, the museums and Islamic Cairo on the second, with a hotel night in between.
A private car picks you up at your hotel in Hurghada and takes you to the airport for your flight to Cairo. Your tickets are booked in advance, so just bring your passport. Your private guide meets you at Cairo Airport and the car heads for Giza.
Khufu's Great Pyramid, built around 2560 BC, was the tallest building on earth for thousands of years. Your guide shows you the three main pyramids, the Sphinx with its lion's body and royal head, and Khafre's granite Valley Temple, where the king's body was prepared for burial.
Next to the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum is aligned with the pyramids. The Hanging Obelisk stands outside, the 11-meter Ramses II fills the atrium, and the Tutankhamun galleries display the young king's entire burial collection together for the first time.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you drive to Saqqara, the burial ground of ancient Memphis. Here the architect Imhotep built a six-step pyramid for King Djoser in the 27th century BC, the first large building of cut stone and the model for every pyramid after it.
Your car takes you to your 5-star hotel in Cairo, where the evening is free. After a full day on your feet at Giza and Saqqara, most travelers are glad to rest. Dinner is not included, so you can eat at the hotel or nearby.
After breakfast and check-out, your guide meets you at the hotel. The first stop is the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, opened in 1902, where two floors of statues, coffins and jewelry show thousands of years of pharaonic history in the original wooden cases.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you drive up to the Citadel, the hilltop fortress Saladin began in 1176, which stayed the seat of Egypt's rulers for centuries. Inside it stands the Mohamed Ali Mosque, built between 1830 and 1848 and known as the Alabaster Mosque.
In Fustat, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization tells Egypt's story from prehistory to modern times. Its highlight is the Royal Mummies Hall, where kings and queens such as Ramses II and Hatshepsut have rested since their procession through Cairo in 2021.
The last stop is Islamic Cairo. Al Muizz Street was the main avenue of the Fatimid city founded in 969 AD and is still lined with mosques and old houses. Beside it, Khan El Khalili has been trading since the 1380s: lanterns, spices, silver and tea.
Your guide and driver take you to Cairo Airport for the flight back to Hurghada. On arrival, a private car brings you from the airport to your hotel, ending your two days in Cairo without a single long drive across the desert.
