Tour Overview
This private day tour covers historic Cairo in one full day: the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the Saladin Citadel with the Mohamed Ali Mosque, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) with its royal mummies, and the medieval lanes of Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili. A private Egyptologist guide and an air-conditioned car collect you from your hotel, and lunch and all entrance fees are included. It is a city day with no pyramids, pairing Cairo's museums with its Islamic-era heart.
Tour Highlights
- Start at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, home of Egypt's historic national collection since the early 1900s, with your Egyptologist choosing the essential pieces.
- Climb to the Saladin Citadel, the hilltop fortress begun in 1176 that served as the seat of Egypt's rulers for some seven hundred years.
- Step inside the Mohamed Ali Mosque, the Alabaster Mosque, built between 1830 and 1848 in the Ottoman style of Istanbul's great mosques.
- Meet the pharaohs in person at the NMEC in Fustat, where the royal mummies of the New Kingdom rest in a dedicated hall.
- End the day on Al Muizz Street and in Khan El Khalili, the old trading heart of Fatimid and Mamluk Cairo.
Tour Route
Does this Old Cairo tour visit the Coptic churches?
No. On this tour, Old Cairo means the historic city of the Citadel, Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili, plus the NMEC in Fustat. It does not visit the Hanging Church, Abu Serga or the Ben Ezra Synagogue in the Coptic quarter, which are covered by our Coptic Cairo day tour.
What is the difference between the Egyptian Museum and the NMEC?
Seeing both museums on one day is the point of this tour, because they do very different jobs. The Egyptian Museum shows the treasures of ancient Egypt in depth. The NMEC tells the wider story of Egyptian civilization through every era and holds the royal mummies:
- Egyptian Museum, Tahrir: the historic ancient Egyptian collection, from the Narmer Palette to the Tanis treasures.
- NMEC, Fustat: Egypt's whole history, from prehistory to today, and the hall of the royal mummies.
- Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza: not on this tour. It is the new museum by the pyramids, home of the Tutankhamun collection.
Is this tour too much for one day?
It is a full and busy day, with two museums, the Citadel and the old bazaar, so it suits travelers who are comfortable on their feet and want to see a lot in a short stay. Your guide keeps each visit focused on the highlights.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring a scarf or light layer: shoulders and knees should be covered inside the Mohamed Ali Mosque, and women may be asked to cover their hair. Bring small cash for Khan El Khalili, where bargaining is normal.
How is this tour different from the other Cairo city tours?
This tour pairs the two city museums, Tahrir and the NMEC, with the Citadel and Khan El Khalili, and it does not go to Giza. Our other city tours either stay with one museum, focus on Islamic or Coptic Cairo, or add the pyramids.
For the Tahrir museum alone in a half day, choose the Egyptian Museum half-day tour. The Islamic Cairo day tour spends the whole day on mosques and madrasas, including Sultan Hassan and Ibn Tulun. Landing in Cairo? The museums, Citadel and Khan El Khalili tour from Cairo Airport covers a similar day from the airport.
Tour Itinerary
A long city day: two museums, a hilltop citadel and an old bazaar, with lunch between.
Your private Egyptologist guide meets you at your hotel, and a private air-conditioned car with bottled water on board drives you into Downtown Cairo. An early start makes sense, since the day fits two museums and three historic sites into one plan.
Your first stop is the Egyptian Museum, the historic home of the national collection, opened in the heart of Cairo in the early 1900s. Your guide leads you to the essentials, such as the Narmer Palette, the statues of the pyramid builders and the treasures of Tanis, and explains how they fit Egypt's long story.
Lunch at a restaurant in Cairo is included, giving you a proper break before the afternoon. It is a good moment to rest your feet, since the next stops involve some climbing at the Citadel and plenty of walking in the old city.
The Citadel was built on the Muqattam hills by Salah El Din from 1176 to defend Cairo, and it remained the seat of government until the 1860s. Inside its walls, you visit the Mohamed Ali Mosque, with its alabaster-clad walls, tall Ottoman minarets and views across the city.
The NMEC in Fustat tells the story of Egyptian civilization across all its eras, from prehistory to modern times. Its most famous gallery holds the royal mummies of the New Kingdom, moved here from the Tahrir museum in 2021 and shown in a quiet, dimly lit hall.
The day ends in historic Cairo. Al Muizz Street, laid out in the Fatimid city of the tenth century, is lined with mosques, madrasas and old houses, and it leads to Khan El Khalili, the bazaar where you can look for lanterns, spices, brass and silver.
From the bazaar, your driver brings you back to your hotel in Cairo or Giza in the private air-conditioned car. Your guide, transport, lunch, entrance fees, water, taxes and service charges are already included, so you only pay for what you buy.
