Tour Overview
This day trip flies you from Hurghada to Cairo and back for a day spent entirely with the pyramids. Instead of central Cairo and the bazaar, the afternoon goes to Saqqara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest of them all. In the morning your private Egyptologist guide shows you the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Return flights, hotel transfers in Hurghada, lunch with a Pyramids view and entrance fees are included.
Tour Highlights
- Fly both ways instead of crossing the desert by road, so your energy goes into Giza and Saqqara rather than the highway between Hurghada and Cairo.
- Walk around the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the last survivor of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, with a private Egyptologist explaining how it was built.
- Face the Great Sphinx and step into Khafre's Valley Temple, where the king's body was received before burial, among square granite pillars.
- See the 11-meter Ramses II and the complete Tutankhamun collection at the Grand Egyptian Museum, a few minutes from the plateau.
- End at Saqqara, where the architect Imhotep stacked six stone steps for King Djoser and started the age of the pyramids about a century before Giza.
Tour Route
How is this different from the other Cairo day trips from Hurghada?
It is the pyramid-focused version. Like our main Cairo day trip by plane, it flies you both ways and starts with Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The afternoon is different: you see the Step Pyramid at Saqqara instead of the Tahrir museum, Al Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili.
If you want central Cairo and the bazaar, choose the Cairo day trip from Hurghada by plane. To save on flights and travel by road, the Cairo day trip by private car is cheaper but means a much longer day. With two days, the 2-day Cairo trip by plane includes both Saqqara and Old Cairo.
Why visit Saqqara as well as Giza?
Because Saqqara shows how the pyramids began. Djoser's Step Pyramid is older than Giza's by about a century and was the first pyramid ever built. Seeing it after Khufu's smooth-sided giant makes the leap in skill clear, and Saqqara is usually much quieter than the Giza plateau.
What should you bring on a day trip from Hurghada to the Pyramids?
Your passport, which you need for both domestic flights. Add comfortable closed shoes for sand and uneven ground at Giza and Saqqara, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, as there is little shade at either site. A light layer helps on the plane and in the evening.
Why does the price change through the year?
Flights are the largest part of the cost, and fares between Hurghada and Cairo rise from October to March, most of all at Christmas and New Year. The per-person price also falls as your group grows, since you share the guide and car. May to September is usually the lowest season.
Tour Itinerary
One flight up, one flight back, and in between a day that follows the pyramids from Giza's famous three to the older Step Pyramid at Saqqara.
Our driver picks you up at your hotel in Hurghada and takes you to the airport for your flight to Cairo. Your tickets are arranged in advance; bring your passport. On arrival, your Egyptologist guide meets you and your private air-conditioned car is ready to drive to Giza.
Three Fourth Dynasty kings, Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, built their pyramids here, with six smaller pyramids for their queens beside them. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, finished around 2560 BC, was the tallest building in the world for thousands of years. Your guide shows you the best views of all three.
The Sphinx was shaped from a single outcrop of limestone, with a lion's body and a royal head usually identified as Khafre. Next to it stands his Valley Temple, built of massive granite blocks, where priests purified the king's body before it went up the causeway to the pyramid.
The Grand Egyptian Museum sits on the edge of the plateau, aligned with the pyramids. You pass the Hanging Obelisk, meet the colossal Ramses II in the atrium and walk the Tutankhamun galleries, where every object from the boy king's tomb is now displayed together.
Lunch is included at a restaurant looking out over the Pyramids. It is a good moment to sit in the shade, drink water and ask your guide the questions saved up from the morning before the drive south to Saqqara.
Saqqara was the burial ground of Memphis, Egypt's first capital. Here Imhotep, vizier of King Djoser, built a pyramid of six stacked steps about 62 meters high, the first large monument made entirely of cut stone. Your guide walks you through the walled enclosure and its great ceremonial courtyard.
At the end of the day you are driven to Cairo Airport for the return flight. When you land in Hurghada, a private air-conditioned car is waiting to take you back to your hotel. You return late, but without the long road journey across the desert.
